  • Apple Hammered on Pollution Charges by Chinese 'Green' Groups

Although many industries in China largely have, shall we say, a less than sublime record when it comes to environmentally-conscious business decisions and actions, several prominent Chinese environmental groups are hammering Apple for the tech giant's own shoddy record when it comes to keeping it green.

More specifically, Apple suppliers in China (but the fault of Apple by virtue of association) are being accused of engaging in systemic pollution. According to the Financial Times, opposition in China is growing toward environmental degradation as the cost of economic growth.

Although Apple does not directly manufacture anything itself and does not disclose, with very few exceptions, the names of its suppliers, the Chinese environmental groups say they used public information and court documents to form a list of more than 20 Apple suppliers with environmental violations to their name.
All told, five Chinese organizations - which are not affiliated with the Chinese government - released a joint report taking Apple to task on abusing "loopholes in developing countries' environmental management systems." According to the controversial report, everything from air pollution to a suspected increase in localized cancer rates are being traced back to Apple's manufacturing engagements across China.

“Apple is committed to driving the highest standards of social responsibility throughout our supply base,” Carolyn Wu, an Apple spokeswoman, was quoted in the FT report. “We require that our suppliers provide safe working conditions, treat workers with dignity and respect, and use environmentally responsible manufacturing processes wherever Apple products are made.”
