  • iOS 4.2 Delayed to 11/16, Possibly Longer

Reports are coming in from multiple sources saying that the iOS 4.2 release has been pushed back to next Tuesday. The problem, which has already been spotted by a number of beta testers, is a bug preventing iPads from making stable WiFi connections. Though MacStories, among others, suggests that the bug may take up to two weeks to fix, one Greek blogger with a good track record of success pegs the release date as November 16.

The issue reportedly only affects iPads, though I've heard of one iPhone 4 user with the same complaint; my iPhone 3G actually works really well. Most commonly it manifests as [ame=http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1042331]a WiFi connection that's available very briefly[/ame] (one to three minutes) and then cuts out. For some users resetting Network Settings works to restore it, more commonly it requires multiple Settings resets (up to five times) to get WiFi working again. For some users, WiFi doesn't work at all and none of the workarounds are effective.

Reports developing through the week had iOS 4.2 dropping today, closely following the release of Mac OS X 10.6.5 earlier in the week. The two updates were thought to be synchronized to provide access to Mac shared printers through AirPrint, but Mac OS X support for AirPrint was pulled at the last minute. While some sources have iOS 4.2 on hold for as much as two weeks so that Apple can "vigorously" test the bug fix, iPhoneHellas blogger Vasilis Ananiadis - who accurately predicted the releases of iPhone OS 2.2 and iOS 4.0.1 - claims it will be released on Tuesday.

It's unclear why this bug emerged so late in the development cycle. It's possible that there's a conflict with some component - such as AirPrint - which uses the network stack, or that it's just a rare corner case that wasn't seen until iOS 4.2 went gold master and was more widely used. Whatever the reason, you can probably hold off on clicking the "Check for Updates" button today.

Pretty crappy news, for iPad users mainly. Although I'm annoyed too, and I have an iPhone 4. I was hoping to get 4.2 along with a jailbreak this weekend. I think limera1n is slowly but surely ruining my battery. Each day it seems to drain a little quicker, and I'm not doing anything different or out of the ordinary. So I really want 4.2 to come out so I can do a fresh restore and stay the hell away from limera1n, I'll be going for redsn0w or greenpois0n. Ofcourse I could restore now to 4.1 and jb with one of these, though what's the point in that since 4.2 is around the corner. I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer :P

You do know that limera1n and greenpois0n use the same jailbreak right?

I know that they both use geohot's exploit, that doesn't mean they are the same 'jailbreak'. You do know they are made by different people, right?

Apple delaying things???? Thats weird that we have to wait for this because it's not like some people have been waiting for a white iPhone 4 either.......

Apple gettin a little sloppy. First daylight savings time alarm clock issue and now the wifi bug. Good thing they caught it. Didn't Geohot talk about a wifi bug and offer to fix it for apple a while back? I wonder if its the same one?

At least they're fixing it now and not going to do an additional update a month later to fix the problem.

I've also experienced this wifi problem with the 4.2 GM on my iPad. Funny thing is, at home where I use my Apple airport express - no problems at all, but at clients with NETGEAR or other routers I get the wifi bug.

Let's all get mad at Apple for missing a release date they never announced or even in the slightest way committed too!

Everyone should just walk it off
I haven't even been waiting for 4.2 and before I knew it, it's already near to be release. A week later won't hurt no one, especially if it's for a good cost. Now I think about it I'm excited for 4.2 I'll be checking this out some time next week!

I am trying to figure out why half of the people are complaining about this?
I mean really? Apple please please release a crappy firmware that way we can complain about it not working properly but I can say I am jb and unlocked on 4.2!!!! Please release it today. I don't care if it doesn't completely work and crashes or what ever I just need it.

But then almost everyone would complain about that apple is doing the right thing by fixing it before letting us have it.

Guys you sound dumb there was never a confirm anyways that it would be released today it's all rumors so really your complaining over nothing. And like I said in my earlier post I think almost every firmware update has hit on a Tuesday!

And I know some people need the unlock because they got the 4 on 4.1 or what ever but you bought it knowing there was not an unlock out. It will come you waited this long what's another 4 days

So you're going to update to a firmware with a serious bug?

And what you're saying in this article is you really have no clue when it's coming, but some guy said Tuesday?

      Not just some guy...

I'm using the gm on my iPad and haven't had any issues but I certainly don't begrudge apple for wanting to fix bugs, if that is indeed the reason behind the move to Tuesday. It could just be the guy making the predictions realized it wasn't coming out today and just made up the reason for it allegedly coming out on Tuesday.
