  • Apple Patents Sophisticated New Voice Controls

Apple recently filed a new patent application that describes sophisticated voice recognition technology that would allow far greater control over the iPhone than ever before. The iPhone currently includes a Voice Control feature, but it generally goes unnoticed by a vast majority of users.

Apple’s latest patent, entitled “User Profiling for Voice Input Processing,” describes how an iPhone could be used to perform more complex tasks than is currently possible today. For example: what if you wanted to create a Genius playlist featuring Beck? Just ask for it. Want to call your BFF? Just say their name and you’ll be talking to them in seconds. The patent describes how an iPhone would be able to understand and process extremely complex tasks using nothing more than a few voice commands.

The current beta version of iOS 5 includes several references to new voice recognition technology from Nuance, makers of Dragon Dictate. This will give the iPhone a whole new level of voice control across the entire operating system. If Apple does plan to improve the voice commands on the iPhone, it might signal the beginning of a whole new level of interaction with the device. Imagine never having another fingerprint on your screen again.

When Apple acquired Siri back in 2010, it was thought that their voice recognition software would be incorporated into a future version of iOS. Since that time, it is unclear what Apple has done with Siri’s software. Currently, Android and Windows Phone 7 devices all have much more robust voice control features than the iPhone. Apple is going to have to play catch-up if they want to stay ahead of the pack.

These days, Apple patents everything under the sun, but most of their patents never see the light of day. Hopefully, that won’t be the case with this one. Before too long, the voice activated computers of Star Trek won’t be science fiction, but science fact.

So this is just another feature the jailbreak has already got that Apple steal.
Their voice recognition is so pathetic you need to jailbreak to make it useful.
Ever since I installed it from Cydia I've been using it on a daily basis. I no longer need to look at the screen to load an app.
I highly doubt Apple's will be as good as the Cydia version.

What is this Cydia voice control app of which you speak? Sounds intriguing.

*EDIT: Nevermind...I found it. Looks cool. Is there anyway to speak text into a text message with it?

I guess they are working on another reason to sue Samsung and HTC? :-P Next is to patent life so we can all be sued by the worst company to ever grace the world.

Why are you here since you seem to hate Apple so much? I agree that the current voice control features need much improvement. My wife has tried it a few times to call someone, but I never use it due to it sucking so bad.

Apple ARE the worst company in the world.

As an Apple fanboy said the other day "The iPhone is a great phone when its jailbroken but when its stock its a piece of crap." and "Too bad its made by the worst company on the planet"

If the iPhone was made by google it would've been the best phone on the market and everyone would have one. As its made be Apple its locked so tight its stupid and missing the most basic of features.

The speech recognition in Cydia is what Apple should put in iOS. Its so easy and it works great. I've had more luck with that than I've had with Windows and a few speech recognition programs.
I've even got that working on the iPad. Now try doing that without jailbreaking it.
Another feature removed by Apple for some unknown stupid reason.

Google make Android phones - do you think they are better than the iPhone? If so why do you have an iPhone?
The reason the iPhone is so popular and IMHO the best phone available atvthe moment, is precisely because Apple lock it down so tight and control all aspects of hardware and software.
Yes, JailBreaking makes it better for those of us that want it but most people want a phone that just works, which is what the iPhone does. Android offers a lot of customisation but most people don't want it, which is why the iPhone sells so well and only about 10% of iPhone owners JB.

Having used both I can safely say that iOS just works better. I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 and the hardware in this phone is way better than a iPhone 4. Android runs great on it and I can customize tons of things right out of the box that I would normally have to jailbreak an iPhone to do the same. However after using it for a couple days I missed my iPhone 4. Getting around the UI, using the phone, getting stuff done (not to mention the app store is far superior than the junkie android market) is way easier/faster on a iPhone than on the Samsung.

Apple has their certain methods of doing things which may anger some people but their is a reason they do what they do. They make products that work. Seeing how successful they have been at doing this I find it hard to believe that anyone could say they are the worst company in the world.

I was a fan of apple, I bough the 1st gen iPhone for $600 and a 3gs when they came out as a upgrade, but A) why do I have to jailbreak to change basic settings B) why does apple steal other peoples work (every new feature on the phone is stolen from the jailbreak comunity) but then they sue everyone that breaths because they patent everything from soup to nuts? On top of that instead of making better products they just sue every other company and force then to stop selling their better products.

This is quite well put. I have an iPhone 4 and a Galaxy S2 ... firstly I thought that the iPhone was better and I have stood in line on every iPhone release to be the first to get one. Every single time!!

However, after swapping between the two I realise that not being able to even look at files on my phone or have a video wallpaper or choose my own ringtone or message tone ... let alone bluetooth anything to someone or sync the phone over Wifi.

The Galaxy S2 just does way too many things that the iPhone 4 can't and it does them faster and with the same responsiveness. The LED backlit screen give better contrast and the 1080p HD video recording and 8MP camera blows it out of the water.

I would love to think that the iPhone 5 will beat all this stuff but it just isn't going to because most of the problems are not hardware based but just locked down software.

Some people say that the general public don't want to customise their phone as much as Android do but surely they would like to just see their files and at least send something over Bluetooth!!?

You can set your own ringtone on a iPhone and syncing over wifi is part of the 5.0 software. I agree with you on the hardware, the GS2 does blow the iPhone 4 out of the water, although that is to be expected since it was just released and the iPhone 4 is over a year old.
