  • No AirPrint Support for Mac, Windows Printers

There's increasing evidence that iOS 4.2 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 will not support AirPrint to Mac and Windows shared printers. References to using AirPrint with shared printers have been removed from iOS 4.2 beta docs, and a dev has reportedly been told by Apple Support that AirPrint would not be work with Windows and Mac printers. If true, this means that iOS 4.2 users will only be able to print to the five HP printers with built-in AirPrint support.

An Apple press release from September 15 says that "iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly to an HP ePrint printer or to a printer shared on a Mac or PC." The release notes from the iOS 4.2 golden master, however, specifically warn that "iOS 4.2 devices can print wirelessly only to printers that support AirPrint and are running the latest available firmware."

One developer wrote on the Apple dev forums that Apple Support told him that "Support for AirPrint on Windows and Mac has been cancelled," and that Apple "will be in contact with you if another opportunity arises in the future." Other developers are claiming that the feature was removed because of compatibility and stability problems.

I don't have a 10.6.5 beta shared printer to test my 4.2 GM against, but the reports are frequent and consistent enough to be credible. If this turns out to be the case, the absence of straightforward printing options will be a blow for wider acceptance of the iPad in particular, which is beginning to make major inroads into the business market.

Actually if you read the whole email the guy sent Jobs, he asked about AirPrint in iOS 4.2.. Didn't say anything about OS X 10.6.5. Since he didn't ask about OS X and only iOS 4.2, Jobs told him correctly that 4.2 has AirPrint with it. The key is that they removed it from OS X 10.6.5, so you can't share your Mac's printer with an iOS device.

There is a work around if you have access to a beta copy of 10.6.5:

was just going to install 4.2gm on my iphone . But I looked at the release notes.

      Printing
iOS 4.2 devices can print wirelessly only to printers that support AirPrint and are running the latest available firmware. Some currently available printers that support AirPrint are:

HP Photosmart Premium e-All-in-One Printer series - C310
HP Photosmart Plus e-All-in-One Printer series - B210
      HP ENVY 100 e-All-in-One Printer Series - D410
HP Photosmart eStation Printer series - C510

Strange that iPhones will only be able to print to HP printers just are HP are releasing the PRE2

Canon have an app to print to some of their printers - it can print to the MPX640 but, of course, mine is the MPX620 which isn't supported.

So does this mean no printing?
