    The term smartphone will soon exit our vernacular due to the obvious redundancy. There are no more dumbphones, only phones.

    Every single phone maker is betting the world on extremely powerful handsets capable of computing tasks we only dreamed were possible in a mobile environment less than five years ago. Categorizing phones between smart and dumb is nearly irrelevant.

    Smartphones are the new phones and there is no looking back. Well, actually there is. This handy-dandy infographic from ReadWriteWeb catalogues some of the major smartphone developments and evolutionary steps over the past 40 years.

    I for one, remember a time when only one girl on the bus had a cellphone and no one liked her spoiled, bratty, Abercrombie wearing, future-stripper self.

    So what if I was jealous? It was only a stupid Motorala flip phone that you could swallow by accident.

      Ha. I liked that, but how can they ignore the Nokia 3210 and snake? Snake was surely the birth of mobile gaming?

      It's a very messy infographic with the pictures seamingly bearing no relation to the timeline.

      No mention of Windows SmatPhones also makes it a fairly poor infographic of 'smartphones' IMHO and there do seem to be a lot of major milestones missing.

      Those damned little Motorola flip phones cost $700 back in the day!
      An iPhone would have cost around $5k...

      Agreed. Also, very limited mention of RIM. And what about Symbian?

      Much like any technology that emerges 10 years from now would cost many times more TODAY than it will then. It's how technology (and real all non-perishable goods) operates.

      I also just realized this.

      Pretty sure the apps were very countable. Weren't there something like 15 (the amount that came pre-installed on the iPhone)?

      Much more of a milestone than a Barbie packaged with a phone IMO...
      They did help get the smartphone trend rolling (along with others) after all.

      and there still hasn't been a snake game that can live up to the first. i miss that game why dont they remake it...

      dumbphones hahaha reminds me of trigger happy tv.

      also smartphones can do dumb things.. so the terms 'smartphone' and 'dumbphone' will be in the hands of the user

      its amazing how fast the mobile technology has advanced.. ten years from black and white screens to mini computers.. imagine 10 years from now.. mini chips in our head so you can basically think to each other.

      i dig all my iphones but damn those was the days when you dropped your phone, cleaned it off and it was still 100% !!! lol

      no broken shattered glass and overpriced repair shops!!

      oh yea back then LEATHER CASES CAME WITH THE PHONE FOR FREE!!!!
      NOT NO CANDY ***** BUMBPERS FOR $30 !!!!

      oh yea snake was the best game ever on a cell phone..
      back when texting first started lol

      there is more wrong with that pic i don't remember countless apps on my first iPhone as i recall there was not a appstore yet.
      so to hint that it was 1 of the reasons iPhone became successful in the start is wrong.
