  • iOS 4.2: Smoother and (A Little) Faster on iPhone 3G
    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dyt97kowyTA&[/ame]

With iOS 4.2 set to drop as soon as this week, hopes are high for stability and performance improvements, especially on older hardware, and some tests of the iOS 4.2 golden master on the iPhone 3G are showing encouraging signs of improvement. TiPB ran through a comparison of iPhone 3.2 versus iOS 4.0 and iOS 4.2 in the video above, and felt it showed better speed and smoothness. My own experience is a little less dramatic, but it's obvious that significant work has been done to make the new "grand unified" firmware work more smoothly on older devices.

TiPB noticed bad scrolling lags and jumpy responsiveness when typing, which are pretty common complaints. My own 3G - bought on the first day of release back in 2008 - performed similarly poorly with 4.02, and I've pretty much ignored the old brick ever since I got my iPhone 4. (Plans to load Android on it for chuckles just never materialized.) I did a few tests for a baseline: The ModMyi app loaded in ten seconds, and Doom II RPG took 13 seconds to get to the splash screen. Though I know it's not ready for 4.2 yet, I baselined Cydia as well: 5 seconds from double-tap to the "Loading Data..." message, and another agonizing 20 before the Home screen comes up. I figured it'll be interesting to compare once the final update is released.

I had to get 4.1 along the way anyway so that I could jailbreak the golden master, so I loaded it on the 3G and did a comparison: speeds and smoothness were pretty much identical, as I'd expected. So I was really looking forward to see some change with 4.2, but unfortunately the difference was... well, underwhelming. There's no doubt that the UI lost the lagginess it had with 4.02 and 4.1, and things like typing are much smoother, but it's still pretty slow. Maybe if I used my 3G on a daily basis, I'd appreciate the improvements more. I guess I'd just call it an evolution rather than a revolution, but that's still good, right?

Anyway, I don't know if this going to be enough to get the lady who's suing Apple to back down, but there's enough here to recommend it to anyone who's still rocking their iPhone 3G. Given that golden masters are almost always binary equivalent to the released code, this bodes pretty well for owners of older devices.

I honestly dont know how anyone can still be using a 3G. I'm using an iPhone 4 right now. 2 people at work have 3G's and whenever they ask me to do or show them something on their 3G its SO PAINFUL. I cant believe how slow it is after using the iPhone 4. And its not the OS. One is on 4.1 and the other is still on 3.x.

I can't see how it'll be faster or smoother. Best bet to stay at 3.13 tbh.

So, about that. I hope Apple is planning to release 4.2 official soon so I can jailbreak it on my iPad and finally FINALLY have the awesome that I've been waiting since April for.

here's why some of us have the 3g:
Because we are under contract and the verizon phone 4 is a few months away. walk from att office across the
street to the verizon office with no
      fee's.
besides..... 4.1 runs fine on my 3g
and all the little upgrades make it palletable for the next few months
Skyfire has also made it even better.
      No glitches on this 3G.....

      I love my 3G on 4.1.
The upcoming upgrade is only a good thing with better performance I'm sure.
      When's the update hitting us?

Sometime this week more than likely. Make sure you have your SHSH backed up if you use an unlock.

THANKS!
get a hold of the latest ultrasn0w.deb file and put it in your autoinstall folder
use something like cyder to get it

No actually it's not. As of right now, there is absolutely no confirmation of this.. Don't hold your breath for a verizon iphone, it's been rumored every year ever since the iPhone's debut. It's hogwash until Apple announces it..

I still have a 3G cause i kept holding out for a white 4. Though, at the rate they're going, i might as well just hold off and get an iPhone 5.

I'd like to see how a 3G holds up on 4.2 and being jailbroken. Non jb is fine, but once it gets weighed down with Winterboard, etc., how responsive will it still be?

disable the launchdaemons and langpacks, then see how responsive it is with winterboard

personally, i like the standard look of the OS and i dont need winterboard for a wallpaper anymore. So my phone gets no winterboard AND the launchdaemon fix.

i'll have to look into disabling the daemons and langpacks. i use winterboard for all the little things i do (which really add up)..
