  • Apple Online Store Now Offering $69 Mac OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive

If numerous reports of erroneous PayPal charges for the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion download have dissuaded you from acquiring the new software from the Mac App Store, you now have another option to put Lion on your machine - but you're going to have to pay more than twice as much for the goods.

We can now report that Apple has finally begun selling the $69 USB install drive through its online store. The move, of course, comes as little surprise given Apple's previous announcement of the forthcoming thumb drive. But only now has the offering officially turned up online.

"OS X Lion is available on a USB thumb drive for installation without the need for a broadband Internet connection," Apple's product description boasts. "Just plug the drive into your USB port and follow the instructions to install. OS X Lion is also available for a lower price as a digital download from the Mac App Store."

Apple does, however, attach an "Important Note" for thumb drive buyers: "When you install OS X Lion using the USB thumb drive, you will not be able to reinstall OS X Lion from Lion Recovery. You will need to use the USB thumb drive to reinstall OS X Lion."

Although traditionalists may not be pleased by Apple's new software distribution methodologies, Apple is showing few - if any - signs that it will continue to embrace old-school disc drives and boxed software packages in the future.

Or you could make your own for $29 for Lion and $5 for a USB drive.

Totally agree with sziklassy - How big is the OS anyway 32gbs? Because that is what you could afford for 40 extra dollars!
