  • Are Top Nintendo Games for iOS Inevitable?

Pressure is mounting for Nintendo to bring a plethora of its most legendary and popular titles to the rival mobile gaming platform that Apple's iOS has become. As chronicled in great detail by Bloomberg on Thursday morning, investors are possessed of the mindset that Nintendo must now do what is "good for business" and expand deep into iPhone and iPad territory.

In “Super Mario 3DLand,” Nintendo Co. will make its iconic Italian plumber battle turtle-like Koopa Troopas on its 3-D player. The company instead should develop titles for Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone, investors say.
Investors and analysts alike are increasing pressure on Nintendo to branch out and take their titles to a place few would ever expect them to turn up. “Smartphones are the new battlefield for the gaming industry,” Masamitsu Ohki, a fund manager at Stats Investment Management Co., tells Bloomberg. “Nintendo should try to either buy its way into this platform or develop something totally new.”

Sources close to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata say that the company is frustrated and confounded by the reality that consumers continue to "shun Nintendo devices" in order to more routinely and actively engage games on iPhones, iPads and even on Facebook.

And Nintendo is bleeding cash as a result of its failure to compete with smartphones and social networks. "The flop of the 3DS debut prompted the company to cut prices 40 percent in Japan and 32 percent in the U.S., the first time the games developer has resorted to such a move within six months of a product’s debut," the Bloomberg

The problem is that they are comparing sales in the wrong way. Nintendo would only get high sales numbers if their games were 99 cents in the App Store. If Nintendo ever put their iconic games on the iOS, they would easily charge $10 to $20 for their games and they wouldn't sell nearly as well as their investors think they would.

any idea (in hard numbers) how well Square's Final Fantasy ports have been selling?
I had the impression they were pulling in a decent haul, despite selling in the $9-$17 range.

      Edit:
Hm. if you go by number of reviews/ratings...

      $0.99 x 550,000 Angry Birds
      $2.99 x 184,000 Plants vs Zombies
      $4.99 x 54,000 CoD: Zombies
      $8.99 x 5,000 Final Fantasy
      $12.99 x 4,000 Chaos Rings
      $15.99 x 500 FF Tactics

      LOL, those aren't good numbers

I've had a nintendo emulator on my phone since the 3G, have all the games I want from that era, even have a genesis, snes, and playstation emulator... I'd say nintendo's a little behind

So much money, is a lot :-)

Consider where Nintendo gets it's $ from portables. There is the portable (possibly a loss), the dev tools, but most importantly the games and the licensing fees. The 3DS like the iPhone is a platform that is controlled by a central authority. Both outfits get a cut of all 3rd party games/apps.

Nintendo has to decide if they can get long term profits from iOS development for just their assets on a platform with a lot of healthy competition. A platform that they do not control. And to be profitable they may need to axe the portable division and abandon their platform.

It's them that own the platform that make 'so much money'. Right now Nintendo needs to consider how to make 'some money'.

The Nintendo brand is a popular brand. They should leverage that to create a smart phone publishing house for themselves and 3rd party developers that want the brand to help them sell games. That may save Nintendo in the portable market.
