  • Cydia & iOS 4.2 Compatibility: Progress Report

With all the talk about iOS 4.2 GM being released, many jailbreak users were beginning to fear a long delay for any 4.2 Jailbreak Tools, due to Cydia being incompatible with the latest, soon to be released, 4.2 Firmware.

However, MuslceNerd has just tweeted a screenshot and states "Both @chpwn and @saurik have been burning the midnight oil prepping for updated version of Cydia http://is.gd/gJSa2". This should give some hope for users who were concerned about jailbrekaing iOS 4.2. It appears that it may be ready in time for the official release.

Of course, no official updates or change notes have been release by Chpwn or Saurik, so all we can do is wait and enjoy this screenshot that teases a new dialog screen for choosing what type of user you are.

I look forward to seeing the updates, and am excited to see how the UI has changed.

OK so not really much of a progress report, but still a report nonetheless...

Well besides the fancy baseband update that comes with 4.2 the ability to set a different text tone per contact is plenty reason for me to want 4.2

I have my iPad on 4.2 for a couple days now and i love the folders! For me i hate that they removed the screen orientation lock function next to the volume buttons. Now its a mute/unmute switch! I have to double press the home button to lock/unlock the screen rotation

I'll have to wait for the 4.2 jailbreak/unlock before i update my 4 to 4.2

Why would anyone want an iPad? LOL!

Seriously, I couldn't help myself. I just don't get it...

I would like to think that in this Cydia update there will be some features from the Rock app. I realize some people strongly disliked the app. However, reviews were a good aspect as it gave insight to problems an app might have. Also being able to backup and restore your apps inside the Rock with your account. Queuing and simultaneous downloads while still browsing other apps was nice. I don't expect Cydia to include every feature of Rock, but Jay did buy out Rock and led us to believe there would be some happy developments to come about due to the merge.

Being able to see apps better is a great first reason followed by too many others to list...

Don't forget, the ipad was created first...just not released first.

Having a different text tone for each contact can be done with BiteSMS. It's free as long as you don't mind ads. Plus, BiteSMS is infinitely better than the stock SMS app.

I'm still debating on whether or not to update to 4.2, I really want to, but I also don't want to, because I would have to set up everything...AGAIN.

Yeh... That is such a pain in the *** lol. Hopefully maybe the new cydia will have something like rock did where it saved ur packages for u.

I don't see why apps can't be installed while your still browsing cydia, and the respring be done when you close cydia!?!? And if you havnt installed anything and no changes have been made then why cant cydia run in the background with native iOS backgrounding!?

Also, updating sources should be controlled by a daemon and done at user defined times such as in the middle of the night!

There's so much that can be done and all the excuses are just laziness! There's no reason why all of the above can't be done!!!!!!!!!!

Question: if I download the 4.2 that's available now(developer gold) do I need to upgrade when the official release comes out? And jailbreak again in order to get cydia?

Its is more or less the same, but it is always good to use the public version instead of the GM, so yes you may have to update again to jailbreak. I think the 4.0 GM wasnt compatible with jailbreakme.com when it came out. Only the official 4.0 was.

I don't think so, not unless Apple finds a huge bug before the launch. Aren't GM releases like, final release candidates?

Ya they are, obviously the exploit will still be there. But the jailbreak may not be made to work right with the GM version, as in the case of 4.0 GM and jailbreakme.com. These new jailbreaks are different though so it may well work, but it is always good to use the public release anyway.

I am upgrading to 4.2 on my iPad weather theirs a jailbreak or not just because of (a good) multitasking and folders. But chwpn told me that their would be a jailbreak at launch but it might be therthered.

He also said that iconoclasm would be on iPad. Yay!
