  • iOS 5 Beta 5, iTunes 10.5 Beta 5, Xcode 4.2 Beta 5, and AppleTV Beta 4 Released

    Updating and using the iOS 5 beta will be done at your own risk. Please be wary of the consequences and risks of using a beta firmware.

    Today, Apple has released beta updates for all their enterprise products: iOS 5, iTunes 10.5, Xcode 4.2, and AppleTV. With the exception of iOS 5 beta 4 and AppleTV, all the other applications were updated to support the newly released iOS 5 beta. According to the release notes, this update should bring some much-needed improvements and bug fixes.

    Just like iOS 5 beta 4, you can download it over-the-air. However, to do OTA, you must do this first on your device:

    Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Contents And Settings

    This will erase all the data on your device - make sure to backup first before doing this (if applicable). From here, you can use the OTA feature on iOS 5 beta 3+ firmwares.

    You can also go the "original" route and just install iOS 5 beta 5 with the IPSW file. Make sure to do it in this order:

    • Backup/sync your device on iTunes 10.5 beta 4
    • Restore your device to iOS 5 beta 5
    • Update iTunes 10.5 to beta 5 and sync your backup with iTunes, or even iCloud

    All supported devices for iOS 5 beta 5 are listed in the picture below:

    Remember, as discovered on iOS 5 beta 4, the OTA update detects components on your device if jailbroken and will refuse to update. In order for you to upgrade from a jailbroken device, you must restore to your current stock iOS 5 firmware, and upgrade via the IPSW or OTA.

    To download the IPSW file for iOS 5 beta 5, or any of the other above released betas, visit the Apple Developer site. You must have a registered developer account to have access to these beta downloads.

      This is simply an untrue statement. I am a legit developer with a license and can not do OTA.

      I installed IOS 5 beta 5 and within 20 minutes I went back to 4.3.3

      On IOS 5 beta 5, I had the following problems:-

      Battery drain was horrendous - within 10 minutes of use, the battery on my iphone 4 had drained by 6% (the phone was fully charged overnight)

      Problem with Messages - for some reason it kept on delivering a message into my inbox even though it had been deleted, as soon as I deleted it, it would come back.

      I just found the phone unusable......working fine now that I'm back on 4.3.3

      Did you erase first? I've yet to experience a problem and battery life seems fine.

      If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

      I upgraded to iOS5 beta 5 via OTA from iOS5b4. That went well. I then restored via iCloud and could not get the phone working again. Through lots of tries, I eventually did get the phone restored to iOS4.3.5.

      I now cannot get the phone to restore to iOS5b5 no matter what I do. I continue to get Error message 20. I have tried using the latest version of iTunes as well as the latest beta version without success. I have tried to restore with iOS5b3, iOS5b4, and iOS5b5. No success.
      I have 2 macs running lion. one has the beta version of iTunes, one has the commercial version of iTunes. I have a developer's account and the phone is provisioned as such.

      Besides error message 20, I've also gotten "Devices isn't eligible for requested build."
      Any ideas would be appreciated.
      Thanks in advance,

      Jon

      Are you a registered developer?

      Try changing your hosts file so it points at Apple not Tu host....

      Yes, I am a registered developer.Yes, TU is pointed at Apple

      You did reboot after changing your Hosts in TU?

      You have to have iTunes 10.5 b5 installed to install 5.0b5. Make sure your hosts are pointed to apple and make sure you are restoring to 5.0b5 and not updating.

      Do not use tiny umbrella at all during the restore.

      So, now I have it restored to IOS5b4. I cannot update to b5 for some reason. It says the firmware is not compatible with iTunes.

      Either something is wrong with the firmware you are using or you dont have the correct itunes installed. What is the filename of the firmware you are trying to restore to?

      Now he's rebooted he still hasn't updated to the latest iTunes beta. When he does that he won't have a problem.

      I have iOS5 version 9A5259f on the phone. I have iTunes 10.5b77 on the computer and i am trying to install 9A5288d

      Beta5 is trying to update OTA, but has been hanging at about 80% for the last 30 minutes

      I found 9A5274d and I am upgrading to that. It seams to work with iTunes 10.5b77

      Not sure you can go from B3 to b5 - once you've updated to b4 you should be able to go to b5.

      Apologies for suggesting you didn't have iTunes b5.

      no problem. I think the problem was going to a version with the last letter "f" from a version with the last letter "d"
      9A5274d upgraded fine. Now I am going to try 9A5288d

      Where do you get the build numbers?
      9A5259f = b3
      9A5274d = b4
      9A5288d = b5

      I think the problem is trying to go from b3 to b5 OTA but most people just refer to the beta numbers rather than the build number.

      I see... my mistake. I didn't have 5274 initially. I must have deleted it by accident and I thought 5259 was b4. that was probably the problem
