  • iOS 5 Beta 5, iTunes 10.5 Beta 5, Xcode 4.2 Beta 5, and AppleTV Beta 4 Released

Updating and using the iOS 5 beta will be done at your own risk. Please be wary of the consequences and risks of using a beta firmware.

Today, Apple has released beta updates for all their enterprise products: iOS 5, iTunes 10.5, Xcode 4.2, and AppleTV. With the exception of iOS 5 beta 4 and AppleTV, all the other applications were updated to support the newly released iOS 5 beta. According to the release notes, this update should bring some much-needed improvements and bug fixes.

Just like iOS 5 beta 4, you can download it over-the-air. However, to do OTA, you must do this first on your device:

Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Contents And Settings

This will erase all the data on your device - make sure to backup first before doing this (if applicable). From here, you can use the OTA feature on iOS 5 beta 3+ firmwares.

You can also go the "original" route and just install iOS 5 beta 5 with the IPSW file. Make sure to do it in this order:

    • Backup/sync your device on iTunes 10.5 beta 4
    • Restore your device to iOS 5 beta 5
    • Update iTunes 10.5 to beta 5 and sync your backup with iTunes, or even iCloud

All supported devices for iOS 5 beta 5 are listed in the picture below:

Remember, as discovered on iOS 5 beta 4, the OTA update detects components on your device if jailbroken and will refuse to update. In order for you to upgrade from a jailbroken device, you must restore to your current stock iOS 5 firmware, and upgrade via the IPSW or OTA.

To download the IPSW file for iOS 5 beta 5, or any of the other above released betas, visit the Apple Developer site. You must have a registered developer account to have access to these beta downloads.

      strange.
with each update I've been forced to primarily update iTunes then back up and sync.
then restore to new ipsw then restore from back up.

else i can't back up or i get an error

Stop telling people you have to erase first!!! That is just not true. All legit iOS users with a developer license can update via the software update option on the iDevice.

Not sure what your problem is - but I had to delete before the update showed.

Stop spouting BS just because it worked for you. I have tried everything an OTA still reports no new software.

And I am a legitimate developer.

Both my i4 and 3GS are on the same account, legit account. And the i4 showed an update but the 3GS did not. So yes I had to erase to get it to show on the 3GS.

So we will continue to tell people to do that.

Im back on 4.3.5 and I cannot update to iOS5 B5. I was on iOS5 b4 and I crashed during update. The best I can get back to is iOS4.3.5 via another computer, but I cannot upgrade from that computer and I cannot upgrade from the original computer with the latest iTunes. Any ideas?

When Apple gives instructions on how to use their beta software, common sense generally holds that it's a good idea to heed their warning.

Yeah thanks... Be that as it may, my phone does not work... i have a dev account and I am a dev. Any advice other than "read the warning" would be helpful.

If you are a dev and have a dev account then the apple developer forums may be a better place to ask for support with issues with a beta. Especially considering the whole NDA thing

That being said more info then "it crashed" may help us help you better. Error numbers etc.

I didn't even know there was an OTA till 4 or 5 hours afterwards, when it notified me on my phone. I then clicked update now, (without erasing settings) and it worked fine. lolz.

Indeed. JHoffy, I apologize for coming off as curt (the post was not directed at you, or any other non-quoted poster), but provide us with some more information--help us help you. Xcode device logs/console output is something else you may want to send our way if it's relevant.

EDIT @ Karl: You can try (if you're willing to risk getting hung up somewhere in the process, such is the risk of beta software) using TinyUmbrella's TSS server to stop the iPhone 4 baseband upgrade (ONLY FOR iPHONE 4) and then running Fix Recovery to try and bypass the resulting recovery loop. Only problems are, I don't believe TU has been updated for the 5.0 betas, and of course, there could be all kinds of problems with that baseband on that firmware (plus Ultrasn0w probably will NOT work on 5.0 as-is).
