  • KillBackground - Kill All Background Apps in AppSwitcher

The Multitasking / AppSwitcher feature, first added in iOS 4, is a great implementation that allows quick switching of applications from anywhere on your device. For the most part, in terms of use for simple purposes, the AppSwitcher does a great job of giving you the options and methods you need to best use your device. The only downside to the Multitasking feature is that you're only able to remove one background application at a time. This can be cumbersome and extremely annoying, especially if you have a ton of applications open. Background applications many times can bog down the performance of your device; thus it is applicable to check every so often to delete processes you're not using. A new tweak that just appeared in Cydia, KillBackground, makes the removal process much easier.

It's quite simple - when you access your AppSwitcher view, there are two skull like tabs on both sides of the view. Tapping either one of those tabs will kill/remove all background tasks in your AppSwitcher. Quick and simple. There are no options or settings to configure and it works well. And to top it off, the tweak is free of charge!

Give it a shot if this something that would be of use to you - it requires iOS 4.0+ and works on all iDevices (I tested on iOS 5 beta 4 and it works fine - using jailbreak tweaks and applications on the iOS 5 beta will be done at your own risk. Please be wary of the consequences and possible risks).

    Name: KillBackground
    Author: Mathieu Bolard
    Version: 1.0-1
    Price: Free

Post your thoughts on this in this thread: there are other applications like this that do similar actions, however what makes this one nice is that it is simple, free, and located inside the AppSwitcher view.

Yeah I too use this, I have since ot came out, I changed it so I just double tap the taskbar (clock bar) to remove them, I have a different one on my daughters iPod that alows u to exclude apps from getting removed too, but I prefere mine for speed and ease of use!

Trying to hit that middle option perfect without enabling voice commands would drive me crazy.

How 'bout a tweak where something like a three finger scroll down minimizes apps while tapping the home button closes them?
Yeah that's a good point however I don't have that issue as I have Voice Commands DISABLED on my phone cause I don't use it and find it rather annoying.

It almost seems like perhaps the iPhone is about due for the addition of another button

One Tap Home = Close App
Short Hold Home = Minimize App

I mean honestly what kinda MORONS over there are Crapple was in charge of the multi-tasking feature and just decided "let's just make it background EVERYTHING"?? Boy and people try to say that Microsoft does dumb crap, I can't tell

      Nuff said!!
You know that's not how iOS multitasking works right? It doesn't actually background everything. It suspends the application and resumes it when you reopen the app from the switcher. The switcher shows recently used apps, not currently backgrounded apps.

Just goes to show how some of you can't escape the primitive thinking of having to memory manage for your OS.

Anyone else start having issues with the update? Since installed my phone has been acting all sorts of strange. For example, photos disappearing from my library, won't connect to iPhoto, when my phone resprings, icons are all over the place then when I try to set them back in place they only "wiggle" for a few seconds before they automatically stop.

I removed the killbackground app after some other troubleshooting and it seems my problem has gone away. Interesting. Real shame because I liked the app too.

Newest update locks up my phone! Hit the button to close all and it dims, then nothing on the phone will respond and nothing further happens. Have to hard boot to get it to work.

      Tried re-installing and same thing.

iPhone 4 on 4.0.1 - no problems with previous versions

I use "RemoveBG" in SBSettings because it would seem to me the best solutions would avoid having to employ any mechanical functions on the phone. The buttons are quite often the first thing to go south on the phone.
