  • Are Some Jailbreakers Losing Their Unlimited Data Plans from AT&T?

According to published reports surfacing Thursday, AT&T is reportedly ready to begin canning the unlimited data plans of subscribers who have jailbroken their iPhones and tether/hotspot off of AT&T's no-longer offered unlimited data plans.

Our friends at 9to5Mac have been hearing from readers who claim to be possessed of the knowledge that Thursday, August 11th 2011, will bring with it an end to unlimited data for those who commit the offense described above.

"If you use MyWi or any tethering on the phone or using the phone as a modem, AT&T will automatically change your unlimited plan to a 2Gb tethering plan for 45 dollars without the customers consent," the article reads. "This is for those who received emails or texts about the use of tethering without an AT&T tethering plan."

AT&T, however, reportedly gave the offenders in question an opportunity to "stop tethering and keep their current plan" before the unlimited data rug was pulled out from beneath them.

As it now stands, AT&T is confirming this report, but won't pinpoint August 11th as the definitive date for this unlimited data Armageddon. One AT&T rep is quoted as saying: "Our goal here is fairness for all of our customers. (This impacts a only small percentage of our smartphone customer base.)"

      2 questions:
Who receives the texts from AT&T; The person tethering or the primary number on the account?
And if I haven't gotten a text or email, am I still ok to tether w/o these consequences?

THOSE WHO HAVNT GOT A LETTER.. U WILL.. i hardly used it .. BUT.. I used MyWi forever.. Finally in May 2011 I got a text and then the next day a letter... Then I called the number and was told they can tell and will do what was mentioned with my plan! I was told to restore my IPhone to remove any third party software that must be running.. Since i didn't said I didn't understand what they were taking about! If I used it one time after this notice.. I'm done .. I have stopped since then.. All seems fine so far!

I got the letter today. I do not have a jail broken phone or tether. I called and they pretty much told me I was a liar and that I had already been switched over. Is there not anything I can do about it? I know some people say they don't tether and really do but I honestly have never tethered. Wouldn't it be a breach in contract on their part?

Hah.. I tether close to 40Gb/Month and I have yet to receive an email, text, or anything else. I signed a contract based on the fact that my data use is unlimited. I can (and will) use however much I want.

^ only a matter of time before you get it. Don't get me wrong, I started the first thread here somewhere after receiving my first text. Ignored it, received the second notice had to call and fight luckily got it cleared. Haven't tether since. The fact is that you do have unlimited internet service but it does not include tethering. Your service is tied down to your iDivice. Good Luck...

You're not transmitting a lot of data when you play an MMO.
It's the media streaming and large file downloading that burn through gigabytes.

Does this go for unlimited iPad data as well?

Verizon just let everyone know that it will block tethering on all idevices.

8/11 here, and thankfully, no new texts and no changes. And no, I'm not tethering.

Or how about their prepaid plan for unlimited edge and 1500 talk/text for $30. Thanks AT&T, I will now jailbreak and use my iPhone on TMo's $30 plan. Not like my 3G connection on AT&T is any faster than TMo's edge anyway. AT&T f'in blows goats anyway! Screw the new crappy iphone comin out; it'll just be substandard crap compared to the competition anyway.

Thanks for helping me make the decision to take the TMobile plunge! F'in douche bags!
Pukebrain? Lol how old are you? Two?

Been tethering all day with tetherme-I haven't received any notices. I did however receive 2 back in May when I used MyWi for literally 5 minutes, just to test it, and a day later received an email from At&t stating the obvious. I called them and let them know I wasn't tethering and they left my plan alone. Haven't received an email or text from them since I've been using tetherme.

Checked my account and it hasn't been switched, no changes have been made. Anyone else?

You can (and will) get slapped on the wrists. tethering is not part of your agreement. They can (and will) stop you.

Sorry guys, the link doesn't seem to be working so here is the gist of it..,

      The Process
The first thing you need to do is obtain a First Generation iPhone, commonly known as the iPhone 2G and how we will refer to it from here on out.
Once you've obtained an iPhone 2G, you'll want to give it a full restore in iTunes. You can do this with your SIM card installed or without. You'll have to put your SIM card in later anyways, so if you don't need to use your actual phone while the process completes, then install your SIM and save yourself a step later.
Once the restore has completed, iTunes will bring you to the phone activation screen (assuming your SIM card is installed, if it's not, disconnect your iPhone, insert the SIM card and reconnect your iPhone). Fill in the required account info and proceed. Whatever options you choose during activation won't really matter as certain account features you already have will override, like unlimited family messaging and the likes. As well, the great part about this portion of the process is that Unlimited data is non-optional - At the end of the activation process, iTunes should tell you something like, "You'll receive an email when your activation is complete". Once you've got the email, all is well and you now have an Unlimited Data plan.
You can verify this many ways like dialing *DATA# from your phone. You'll then receive a text message with details about your data plan where it will indicate you have unlimited data. You can also log-in to your AT&T account online and go to the features portion of your account to see unlimited data for whichever phone line you used during activation.
This works, but IME, not if you still have a data package on your phone. You need to remove the data package (give ATT a call and tell them you want to use a dumb phone). Call *3286# to verify the data package is removed (this may take a couple hours to show). **to clarify, your sim actually does have to be in a dumb phone when doing this** From there, follow the guide and you're good.

Aug 18th @ 3:15 PM EST I got the text asking if I know that tethering requires a plan. I used to use MyWi but switched to PDAnet when this thread started. Guess that didn't work. Problem is right now I NEED to tether on the weekends just to access the internet, no DL's or videos.

      Eh...what can you do?

You are prob ok! Seems like it was the mywi that caused this because it doesnt change the apn settings like pdanet does. I never tethered my data but i did use it to tether my wifi because i dont have a usb adapter and the router is too far away. I got 2 text stating that i needed to upgrade to a tethering plan and didnt take it seriously. Wish i did now. then i got the one stating that they upgraded my plan. Oh well! Hopefully you are safe now.

      DO NOT TETHER!!!!
Restore you're phone ( rejailbreak if you want ) but even if you delete a tethering app, you WILL GET CAUGHT. I deleted all these apps MyWi,PDaNet,ThetherMe and still got
caught with 3 phones in three straight days. I don't work for AT&T
or any crap like that. I'm just trying to
      help...

I'm confused by this statement. The act of having the app installed or not is completely irrelevant. If you actually end up tethering without a tethering plan, you get busted.

A while back me and my brother Both got the first text warning (Mine came a few days after his) we both tethered our own phones to our own laptops, I only had about 4gb's that month due to downloading movies ON my phone and tethering every now and then, my brother used a bit more than me, and the majority of his was due to tethering (not his fault, our ignorant older brother abused his connection every time he got on). Well I don't know the exact time that it's been since we got the first warning, but a couple weeks ago my brother got the "your plan has been upgraded and there is nothing you can do about it" message. (btw we were using mywi the majority of the time, but we shoulda used pdanet the whole time) so ever since then I've been cautious about using tethering and I still haven't got the message, luckily. But all this kinda makes me wonder. My brother averaged about 4-6gb's a month, and mine (except for that one month) is usually less than 2gb's (and that's overall data, not just tethering). So maybe at&t is targeting heavy data users, although from what I've seen 10gb's and more is more to the heavier Side than 4-6gb's. But we'll see if that's true or not If I do or don't get that message here in the next month or so. Just putting in my little story .

Now on 8/22 and I still tether nearly daily using tether me. Have not received any notices, and I just payed a cycle on my AT&T bill last week. No new charges, and my account looks unchanged in account settings. I tether for several hours a day at work on my iPad 2. I wonder if people who tether their Laptops/Macs are the only ones having this problem, as I'm sure surfing and using PC/mac based applications uses a different form of data versus the mobile data information sent from websites to mobile platforms like iPhones and iPads. And since iPad uses the same data usage, maybe AT&T can't tell the difference between the two.

On another note I have a question-everyone seems to think that using tetherme will get you caught as well...consider this: if you use blue tooth tethering on your iPhone using tetherme, then how on earth could AT&T possibly know when you use blue tooth to connect to a device? That's just not possible because nothing is being sent to AT&T. It's not a wifi hotspot. This is what makes me think that the only ones getting caught are people tethering to PC's/Macs, because it's a different type of data being transmitted. You're accessing sites via the desktop, and not mobile versions. Thoughts? If you've received a notice and a change of service from AT&T please post what you were tethering to...was it a tablet? Laptop? Gaming device?

And for those who say I'm the type that's complaining and I should be caught and punished, consider this...I'm not tethering to a laptop or computer-I'm simply using a device that's larger than the one I already own to view the exact same content on. IPad's and iPhones are no different from one another, other than screen size and speed. I have the exact same apps on my iPad as I do on my iPhone...so what difference should it make which device I use? So why tether? you might ask...because it's a bigger screen
