  • Are Some Jailbreakers Losing Their Unlimited Data Plans from AT&T?

According to published reports surfacing Thursday, AT&T is reportedly ready to begin canning the unlimited data plans of subscribers who have jailbroken their iPhones and tether/hotspot off of AT&T's no-longer offered unlimited data plans.

Our friends at 9to5Mac have been hearing from readers who claim to be possessed of the knowledge that Thursday, August 11th 2011, will bring with it an end to unlimited data for those who commit the offense described above.

"If you use MyWi or any tethering on the phone or using the phone as a modem, AT&T will automatically change your unlimited plan to a 2Gb tethering plan for 45 dollars without the customers consent," the article reads. "This is for those who received emails or texts about the use of tethering without an AT&T tethering plan."

AT&T, however, reportedly gave the offenders in question an opportunity to "stop tethering and keep their current plan" before the unlimited data rug was pulled out from beneath them.

As it now stands, AT&T is confirming this report, but won't pinpoint August 11th as the definitive date for this unlimited data Armageddon. One AT&T rep is quoted as saying: "Our goal here is fairness for all of our customers. (This impacts a only small percentage of our smartphone customer base.)"

It doesn't sound like they are going after those that use their data sparingly. In any case, tethering is strictly NOT in our contracts. People's sense of entitlement in this country is laughable to me.

At what point is AT&T calling data use "excessive"?

I only tether every 4 days when I'm stuck at work with zero WiFI/Internet connection and am on a 24 hour shift (no sleep, gotta stay awake somehow).

If we are talking 2-5 GB a month, then I see no problem with this "new" plan AT&T has. Well, I have less of a problem with it. It still irks me that I'm paying for "Unlimited", yet have a limitation in place.

So what is the magical number?

for all the people talking about JB been bad, wasnt the supreme court that say that JB its not illegal,, so how can a companie like ATT denied u or restrict anything on something not illegal... tethering is by they standar but,,, just cause ur JB doesnt mean u doing that

No sir. I actually have unlimited data. And... they never did offer free tethering.

The title to this newspost is misleading. JB isn't causing issues. Those using programs only provided via JB are getting busted not for JB itself, but for out of contract tethering.

It is $45 for 2GB + tethering package.
      $25 for 2GB + $20 for tethering which AT&T gives you an additional 2GB so 4GB total for $45

Check em out if you want to avoid the expensive At&t tax…

Either use TeatherMe/PDANet and make sure the appropriate settings are on or keep MyWi and edit your Teather APN so that it matches your data APN.
I received the TOD from AT&T while using TetherMe and I was only using 5 - 5 1/2 GB per month. So far I haven't received another TOD while using PDANet but I also cut my tethering down to under 2 1/2GB a month.

I am running 4.2.1 and like I mentioned in my earlier post, I got hammered. I am pissed because I don't tether but they say I have. Therefore I have no recourse of action. I am f@#*Ed with a capital F. I have been with AT&T for 10 years and they more than likely just lost my money.

If they change your data package and you truthfully have not tethered, I would give them a call. My bet is the heavy data texts were just that, heavy data texts. Now they are probably looking at heavy data users and seeing where that traffic is coming from. If you fall into heavy data (which has yet to be defined, but I would assume over 2-4GB a month), they are likely checking you for tethering. If you don't tether, I wouldn't worry one bit.

Can you point to some sort of walkthrough? I really like MyWi and would prefer to do this change than pay for TetherMe/PDANet to do something I already paid $20 for (and works nicely for my iPad 2 which is wi-fi only).

      ----edit

Looks like this won't help anyway. I got the 'tether-text' from AT&T a few months ago. I guess now I've admitted on the web that I tether (oh well) but played dumb on the phone with them a few months ago. I need to look at my contract a little more closely. I've been on unlimited data since August 2007; I saw some people making comments about iPhone 2G (first gen, I'm assuming) but I don't see how that makes any difference.

Eventually we are ALL going to lose our unlimited data plans. Period. I'm just going to fight the battle as long as I can.

To the genius calling us " data hogs "
What part of " this impacts only a small percentage of our smartphone customer base " do you not understand !
This decision is about money and greed, plain and simple.

I have been giving At&T close to $300.00 a Month for over 3 and 1/2 half years now. Not only does my data usage have absolutely no affect in the grand scheme of their network but I have payed dearly for every single unreliable and usually slow bit of data I ever used!
If this story is true, I will be taking all five of my " out of contract " and unlocked phones back to Sprint.
      FU AT&T!!!!!!!!

You're going to take your unlocked AT&T phones to Sprint? Good luck with that.

The genius is me... and I am referring to those tethering dozens of gigs a month. yes, I would call them data hogs. If you don't fit into that category, why so upset?

You mention Sprint. I had them for the past 8 months. Slow data, but it is unlimited and they don't care about tethering. If they had the iPhone and if they had the network stress ATT and Verizon do, you can bet their plans would change as well. Maybe not overnight (but hey, ATT's plans didn't change overnight either). For four phones, you are likely going to be paying right around the same price on Sprint as you did on ATT, especially when they slap you in the face with the $10 smart phone surcharge per line.

I am still willing to bet that those who do not use a lot of data (again this hasn't been defined, but I would guess over 2-4GB a month) but DO tether probably aren't going to be hit with anything. ATT is likely looking at those who are using tons of data to see whether they are tethering or not.

TMO will also be great. You will have 2G data on your iPhone (though it will be unlimited!) until ATT swallows TMO up in the coming year...

Has it ever occurred to you the telecom MONOPOLY are raising prices!?! Also pukebrain, did you know you can get unlimited EVERYTHING from TMobile for $50 a month? Or how about their prepaid plan for unlimited edge and 1500 talk/text for $30. Thanks AT&T, I will now jailbreak and use my iPhone on TMo's $30 plan. Not like my 3G connection on AT&T is any faster than TMo's edge anyway. AT&T f'in blows goats anyway! Screw the new crappy iphone comin out; it'll just be substandard crap compared to the competition anyway.

Thanks for helping me make the decision to take the TMobile plunge! F'in douche bags!

I pay for data.... why should I pay again for the same data?????!!!! I'm confused. Whether it's in the terms or contract its clearly highway robbery... its my data... I paid for it so why should it matter what I view it on.... ATT <---- A** holes
