  • PdaNet turns iPhone into Wi-Fi Hotspot

Turning a smartphone into a Wi-Fi hotspot is nothing new, unless you have an iPhone. Today, June Fabrics released PdaNet, a jailbreak app that turns any iPhone into a Wi-Fi hotspot regardless of what network happens to be available. Obviously, an Edge connection will be painfully slow, but a decent 3G signal should provide enough bandwidth for most users to surf the web comfortably. According to June Fabric’s website, “PdaNet provides the fastest connection speed possible from your data service and data signal.”

With PdaNet, users can enjoy the freedom of a personal Wi-Fi hub without the additional cost that most tethering plans bring with them. Some users may not want to create a Wi-Fi hotspot in a crowded coffee shop. If this is the case, users can connect an iPhone to a laptop via USB cable. A desktop client is required for this type of connection, luckily both Mac and Windows versions are available.

According to PdaNet’s twitter feed, an iPad version is in the works. This is good news for iPad users. iOS 4.2 beta 2 was recently released to developers and the tethering preference that was present in earlier versions had been removed. This feature might have been removed by mistake, but it’s more likely that Apple removed it because of pressure from AT&T. We’ll just have to wait till November to find out if tethering makes it back into iOS 4.2 for iPad.

One thing i have to admit is better on android is the tethering ability. Not only is it built in with a simple switch, but phones like the Evo 4G create real infrastructure hotshots. My cousin has one and he uses it to play Modern Warfare 2 online on 360..can't do this with the iPhone. Yet anyway.

I appreciate the response. I believe my "crap being thown at the writer" was warranted as do plenty of other readers.

The reason I challenged the writers post was becuase I've always valued MMI as a great source and I felt this strayed a bit.

I respect you as an individual here at MMi and know that some readers as yourself sometimes want to take your approach when they read articles they feel are "sluggish" or whatever. But the thing is you see what happened right ? People went against you and turned ugly...I think that a better approach would be to pm the writer with your views and who knows , maybe that might change things. Thanks for understanding and enjoy MMi

And no please dont be a sheep, lets just move forward

PDANet does not require a desktop client anymore unless you want to connect via USB. I actually used it before when I've been on the road and found it to be a little buggy but I updated and gave it a try anyway. The new hotspot feature is really cool! It let me password protect my
network. But the really big surprise was the speed. I was on an Edge network at the time and it was blazing fast!! You guys should try it out. And no I don't work for June Fabrics.

I own PDANet, Modem and MyWi. For all it's worth MyWi performs better in all instances for me. Since I have "grandfather" unlimited data, I've cancelled my internet service at home. PDANet was a bit buggy for me and Modem does not have wifi tethering. Just an opinion.

I have used PDANet in the past, I think I may have even purchased it before (I can't find the receipt, so I am not sure). That being said, here is problem that I had with PDANet:

It used a proxy to do it's work, the setup it used ended up draining the battery twice as fast as other solutions. With MyWi, if I have the phone plugged into the wall or Computer, the battery still charges up to 100%, with PDANet, it would drain within two hours.

The other problem that I had with PDANet is that it was a pain to setup on WiFi, you first had to create an AdHoc network from your computer, then join it, then start PDANet, with MyWil, I can simply leave it running in the background and connect anytime that I want. And PDANet would only work about 30% of the time that I wanted to connect to it.

I do not know if it still does this or not, but since I already have purchased MyWi and it is working, I see no reason to find out.
