  • AT&T Scheduled to Implement Data Throttling Just In Time For iPhone 5

All of the iPhone Unlimited Data Subscribers grandfathered into their current data plan take notice, AT&T is going to start messing with your golden goose.

AT&T has already implemented data caps for new customers and killed the unlimited data plan as we know it, but now they're going to throttle down grandfathered unlimited data subscribers' speeds based on how much bandwidth they use, according to 9to5Mac's sources. This shouldn't come as a surprise, Verizon and Virgin have started doing the same to their top data users, and cable telecoms like Time Warner and Comcast have done the same as well.

While AT&T may be planning to implement data throttling in October to help offset the rise in data usage associated with a new product launch (iPhone 5), the merit behind data throttling is questionable at best. The throttling will function much like efforts by Verizon and Virgin with users' speeds being neutered once a certain amount of data has been used. The exact numbers AT&T will use for their cap aren't clear yet, but the usual PR spin of the policy only affecting 5% of AT&T subscribers is likely to be thrown around.

What I don't understand is how they can do this to us unlimited customers and get away with it? I got the iPhone when it first came out... hardly ever used data on it because of edge.... I paid all of that money not to hardly use it because of my frustration using edge....

I just went through this with my provider.... I only got 5GB a month... for $39.95 used to be unlimited.... this month I was over by 17GB.... so by the time I paid for my overage and my monthly charge I was forced to change my account to the premium account for $72.00 a month and now I get 200 GB a month.

I am so sick of what they are doing with data....

Get this... I pay $30.00 for unlimited data for my iPad $360 a year
I pay $30.00 for unlimited data for my iPhone $360 a year
For my internet provider it is now $864

So for one year I pay $1,584.00 for data on my iDevice.. I think I pay enough for my unlimited plans.....

As the saying goes you get what you pay for... well I am paying for what I better get!

iCloud, more data usage, updates over the air, more data usage, they are setting up everything for iOS 5, they know with iOS 5 we are going to use more data than before. So they getting ready.

I see some breach of contract. Unlimited is unlimited. What if we all Class Act AT&T ?

Just to prove how cheap data is, in the uk you can get 10GB for 15 and 1.50 for every gig over.

I would definitely be game with suing AT&T over this throttling issue they shouldn't have kept grandfathered data if they couldn't handle the load which they can. I live in semi rural area with no 3G coverage within like 3 miles or so. So I use ****** edge for my calls and wifi. When I went to California last month I was on 3G the entire time and the normal stuff of downloading apps and Netflix and other streaming on my phone in that 8 day period I used almost 7GB of data which didnt bother me at 3Mbps speed minimum but if they throttle that back I think the data price should be dropped to 10 bucks especially if there gonna throttle at 2GB

people constantly say this to me.... why would I have a 3G ipad if I was just going to tether to my phone? When I am on the road for work I would rather use battery on the ipad to browse if its with me and save my phone battery for things like calls and texts.

I have seen some stuff about this and it has to do with the fact that BT was required to 'unbundle' the last mile of wiring. This allows other companies to provide service over existing infrastructure and pass on competitive pricing. i'm jealous since I don't see this happening in the US for a very long time if ever.

I have also heard that you can walk into all kinds of places (e.g., a gas station, convenience or grocery store) and get an internet connection for super cheap and that there are companies catering low latency connections just for gamers. it must be nice.

Data Throttling should be illegal., it was NOT in the terms of the contract I signed in the summer of 2009 AND I don't pay $30 a month for limited data usage, I pay $30 a month for UNLIMITED DATA. period.

Yes, if I want to download 50 gigs, it's my data. That's why I went with the Unlimited Data Plan.

Because I do not mod my iDevices. When I go places I want to be able to use both iDevices without draining my batteries on either iDevice.

I've read a couple post here that suggest this is not a good thing...will some please elaborate on why!? (i actually registered to post this ;p )

I really can not see them throttling data capped plans, if they did that, I would be pretty ticked. I'm paying a lot for my data, $10 per gigabyte, except for the first one at $15. I don't use over 1.5 usually, and the most I've ever used is 3. If I'm paying per gigabyte, I can't see why they would throttle my speed. One reason I stick with AT&T, is because their data service is so much faster than AT&T.

Let me guess.....the magic number for them choking out the data speed will probably be.......2GB. The same as their implemented plan. And they'll probably throttle it back to the point where it's useless to use data beyond that point from how slow it will become.....essentially forcing customers to just switch to the 2GB plan.

      What a crock!
      im grandfathered...

yeah mine is already being throttled. to the point where it feels close to edge dont believe me? ill upload a picture...

When this happens, I'll call and complain that my service is slow.
Just like I have been complaining every few days for the past 2 months about the completely degraded cell service. I cannot talk to another AT&T customer for more than 10 min at a time or I get "call failed." Talk to anyone on another network for as long as you want tho.
I have to call the same number 3-10 times in a row just to get through...
