  • BBC Launches International iPlayer Service, Makes a Whole Lotta Changes

The BBC launched the international version of its iPlayer application today for iPad users and it makes the British version look just a wee bit inadequate.

The subscription based App costs 50 Euros/$70 a year or 7 Euros/$10 month-to-month. While the British version of iPlayer is free it also only serves as a way for viewers to catch up on shows they missed from the past week. The international iPlayer is like a BBC Netflix or Hulu with an extensive backlog of 1000 hours of shows extending back nearly 60 years (Doctor Who fans can rejoice).

The app is currently available in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.

Viewers will also be able to stream over 3G and view programs offline, two things British users currently lack. However, a huge omission is the lack of subtitles especially for an "international" app meant for non English speaking countries.

The United States and Australia should be added to the mix later this year. Hopefully by then the BBC has added AirPlay support so users can stream content to their entertainment systems.

Is this a hopeful guess, or do you know something we don't?
Certain proxy services are still better value though.
