IK Multimedia has just announced a few new products that are sure to make any electronic musician happy. If you’ve ever wanted to hook up a keyboard to your iOS device, soon you’ll be able to do just that with iRig MIDI ($69.99). It will ship with the free versions of IK Multimedia’s other new products, SampleTank for iOS and iRig MIDI Recorder.
iRig MIDI does for electronic musicians what the original iRig did for guitar players. It gives you the freedom to connect the gear you want to use, with your iOS devices. iRig MIDI will finally give users a way to connect a MIDI keyboard controller or other MIDI compatible instrument to an iOS device. This will open up a whole new level of creative freedom for musicians who frequently find themselves frustrated with the lack of control that a touch screen can sometime offer.
IK Multimedia states, “iRig MIDI is the only compact iOS MIDI interface sporting 3 MIDI ports: IN/OUT/THRU. These connect to any standard MIDI jacks using the included 2 x 1.6m/5.2’ cables. iRig MIDI also has 2 LEDs for displaying the MIDI activity on the IN and OUT ports. iRig MIDI also exclusively provides a micro USB port – with included cable – that connects to any standard USB power supply source so that the iOS device can stay fully powered during long sessions.”
Currently there are over 50 apps that use Apple’s Core MIDI interface standard and they should all be compatible with iRig MIDI. For a complete list of compatible apps click here.
SampleTank for iOS is IK Multimedia’s portable version of SampleTank for Mac and PC. It’s been designed with live performances in mind, giving musicians a virtual workstation in the palm of your hand. It will ship with a “4-part multi-timbral instrument with a sound set of over 1 GB of samples for over 500 acoustic, electric and electronic instruments (including a selection of the best workstation sounds from SampleTank, orchestral sounds from Miroslav Philharmonik and synths sounds from SampleMoog) plus a selection of over 1,000 melodic and rhythmic patterns that span every musical genre.” There will also be over 20 studio quality effects available for every instrument. Unfortunately, there’s no word on pricing as of yet.
iRig MIDI Recorder is an iOS app that lets you record MIDI sequences from and to MIDI enabled devices. This means that if you want to record a keyboard performance to use later in another app that supports MIDI, you can. It will be free when it’s released and is fully compatible with the iRig MIDI hardware interface.
As Apple’s iOS continues to mature, so to will the tools available for the iOS musician. With a host of new gear coming out from IK Multimedia in the near future, it’s definitely a good time to be an electronic musician. I look forward to testing out iRig MIDI, Recorder and SampleTank for iOS when they ship in the near future.
