New 27" Thunderbolt Displays Available
Apple announced, alongside the new Mac Minis and MacBook Airs, the new 27" Thunderbolt equipped displays ($999).
The displays sport the same 2560 X 1440 resolution as previous models, are LED backlit and still only available in a GLOSSY screen option. Matte screen lovers will still be disappointed. Everything else seems to be the same, including the ambient light sensor, massive 178 degree viewing angle, and 27" size. The brightness (375 cd/m2, contrast ratio (1000:1) and response time (12ms) remain unchanged as well.
The new stuff is all on the back. The usual three USB ports are now accompanied by a firewire 800 port, Thunderbolt port, and a Gigabit Ethernet port. Included in the box is the always nifty Thunderbolt plus magsafe connector so the display can be connected to your laptop (new MacBook Pros, MBAs preferably) and charge it at the same time.
While the price still may be steep for many, those who lust after unifying their products will be pleased, and disappointed with the update. The only real updates to the display are the FaceTime HD camera and the new I/Os.
Oh and oddly enough, the actual Apple Store product information doesn't reflect the updated Thunderbolt Displays. It still shows the specs for the old ones. Go figure.
