  • Apple Updates Migration Assistant Ahead of Lion Launch Tomorrow

Apple today issued an update to Migration Assistant in preparation for the arrival of Mac OS X Lion, tomorrow. This update is only necessary if you plan on transferring settings from a system that currently uses Snow Leopard to another system that’s already been upgraded to Lion. If you are simply upgrading to Lion on a Mac that’s running Snow Leopard, then this update will not affect you.

According to Apple’s software update utility, “This update addresses an issue with the Migration Assistant application in Mac OS X Snow Leopard that prevents transfer of your personal data, settings, and compatible applications from a Mac running Mac OS X Snow Leopard to a new Mac running Mac OS X Lion.”

The update weighs in at a mere 312KB, so it shouldn’t take more than a few seconds to download and run the update. That is of course, unless you have any other software that needs to be updated; then I suspect it will take a bit longer.

Migration Assistant, for those of you who many not remember, is an Apple utility that has been designed to make the process of moving important settings and data from one computer to a Mac a much easier process. If you have a PC and are switching to a Mac, Migration Assistant can really help new Mac users set up their new systems with ease.

Mac OS X Lion is set to pounce tomorrow morning. Are you looking forward to it as much as I am?

I downloaded and installed the developer GM of Lion from the App Store and selected to install on my Snow Leopard partition. It upgraded fine and did not affect my Bootcamp partition at all.

I did, however, have to reinstall Parallels to get my VM to work properly again.

The real story here is that Migration Assistant is being updated so that customers who purchase the new MacBook Air tomorrow will not have issues migrating their data over from a Mac currently running Snow Leopard. Hence confirming a MacBook Air refresh tomorrow!
