  • Samsung Pulls iPad Smart Cover Clone From Stores

Anymode's Smart Case has been pulled from Samsung retail stores in Korea, because, well, blatant rip-offs don't get much more blatant than this.

The case is a near carbon copy of Apple's Smart Cover, which oddly enough is a near carbon copy of InCase's Convertible Magazine Jacket, as pointed out by the guys over at TechCrunch. It seems something like this would get noticed before being stocked in Samsung's retail stores, especially amidst the companies legal battle with Apple, but Samsung did release a statement trying to clear up the matter.

As a general practice, Samsung Electronics reviews and approves all accessories produced by partners before they are given the “Designed for Samsung Mobile” mark.

In this case, approval was not given to Anymode for the accessory to feature this official designation. We are working with Anymode to address this oversight and the product has already been removed from the Anymode sales website. The product has not been sold. - Samsung Tomorrow Blog
Apparently Samsung forgot to review and approve this device before stocking it in their stores. Even if the device didn't have a "Designed for Samsung Mobile" mark on it, which it sounds like it did, there should be some sort of supply chain oversight to make sure flubs like this don't happen. These stores don't just get boxes filled with things and put them on the shelves. There are SKU numbers and barcodes that scan when purchased to update inventory automatically. There's no way the product wasn't in their "system." Ok there probably is a way, it just seems highly unlikely.

      "Eerily similar"?

I love how anything negative about Apple has to be put in the most gentle way possible. One's a "blatant rip-off"........the other is just "eerily similar".

      That's cute.

Everyone rips from everyone these days. No one really has an original idea. I am a Apple Fan, but stealing a idea is still stealing. Mostly apple makes new ideas but there are times when they rip off a idea from somewhere else. (*Coughs* the Mouse for the Mac)

is it even possible that the smart cover was made by incase for apple? or that, apple licensed the design to incase and allowed them to rename it for a price? it's better to license your product design. suing a black market cloner will give you zero return, but huge lawyer tab instead. so why not make some extra licensing money?
