  • Google Voice Returns: App Store Approval Begins

Last week Paul had discussed the soon to be return, of GV Mobile to the App store, and today an App has managed to sneak in before Sean's could.

Google Voice apps, once deemed to be unworthy of the AppStore due to Apple's claims that these apps were "duplicating features that the iPhone comes with (Dialer, SMS, etc)", leaving apps like GV Mobile to shift over to our beloved Jailbroken devices. However, with the recent changes to Apple's guidelines on getting Apps approved, it appears that Google Voice has come back to our iDevices.

Andreas Amann, the developer of GV Connect, submitted his app last week following Apple's new guidelines documentation for the App Store approval process.

Sean Kovac, the developer behind GV Mobile+, which we've seen in Cydia, has been submitted to the App Store as well and is awaiting approval. You can follow his blog here, and you can read about the chaos that ensued last year if you missed it.

So if your a big fan, you can hang on just a little longer, or for the small amount of $2.99, go ahead and start making Google Voice calls and SMS Messages with your Google Voice number.

iTunes Link - The app is now available in the App sore for $2.99.

    • Place calls using your Google Voice number rather than your mobile number - enter number directly, select a contact from your device's contacts, or call back any number in your history.
    • Send and receive text messages (SMS) from your Google Voice number.
    • Listen to voicemails and recorded conversations right on your device (allowing you to pause, rewind, or fast forward to any point within the message) - voicemails will also show the transcription of the message when available.
    • Mark messages as starred, attach notes to conversations, block/unblock senders, or delete conversations.
    • Easily search in your history by contact, message, or note.
    • Messages are stored on your device for offline access.
    • Composing notes and text messages can be done in landscape mode.
    • Quickly change various Google Voice account settings (call forwarding, do-not-disturb, message notifications, …) directly from within the application.
    • Automatic checking for new messages while the application is active.
    • Direct access to your device's contacts without needing to synchronize them with Google
    • All communication is done with the Google Voice website directly, no need to hand over your account information to a third-party.
    • Full support for fast app switching in iOS4 and high-resolution graphics for retina displays.

What I'd like to see is a Cydia app which integrates VoIP into the phone app itself. It would always be running that way, without any need to use backgrounder.

You could have easily handled this in a private message. No need to bust his balls in the forum.

The black swan web app allows this, it's called direct dialing. It is also great when u pair it up with the perfect browser app so that u can background it with save state.

I'm not sure you get what Google Voice is.

I get what it is. I've had it for two years. How is this app any better than the web app? It's not. It's three dollars for less features.

Google voice is a great many things. One of those things is VOIP. You obviously haven't the slightest clue what you're talking about. Just because the Android implementation forces you to use your minutes while using Google Voice doesn't change the fact that it's a VOIP solution to replace your other telephony methods.

It's a good thing a mod deleted my comment. I mean, it must be pretty offensive to hear me say that I cannot find the app. I guess I'm not allowed to contribute. Sweet, mods.

Google Voice redirects calls to your personal lines (work/office/cell) from one number (your GV number). At its core, it's not intended to be a VOIP service, it's a hub for all your communications under one number that can reach all.

It very recently added VOIP to gmail and that's it. You can't even call initiate VOIP calls from Google Voice itself, just gmail.

      Sooooo you're still wrong.

This is by far the better of the two GV apps, but not being able to stay signed in after exiting the app is annoying... very annoying. If it would just reconnect when I kick the app up without having to sign in.... or at very least remember my login info... that'd be perfect.

Which one is better? I see GV Connect and GV Mobile +, both for $2.99.
