  • Spotify Officially Launching Tomorrow in The US

On Thursday - yes, tomorrow - Spotify, the hugely popular European-based online music service will launch in the US and put the long-awaited streaming service in direct, unavoidable competition with Apple's iTunes.

And Spotify is already laying it on thick, promising American music lovers "any track, any time, anywhere" at no charge.

"Spotify, the award-winning digital music service loved by millions of Europeans, will become available tomorrow morning in the United States by invitation and subscription," Spotify revealed late Wednesday via press release. "Spotify is a new way to listen to and manage your music, discover new tracks and share songs and playlists with friends music whenever you want it, wherever you are."

Here's how the launch will work as we understand it. The service will formally debut tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM EST. Unfortunately, the first wave of availability is limited to "invitation and subscription." What does that mean, exactly? We're guessing it has something to do with the email alert sign-up opportunity Spotify recently made available ahead of the US launch. Even at this late hour, Spotify is still offering pre-subscriptions at www.spotify.com - so if you're hoping for access tomorrow, signing up tonight may be your best bet (but there are no guarantees).

Spotify will only say that it will provide more subscription and service details at the time of Thursday morning's launch. Of course, what remains to be seen is how Spotify may charge users for expanded use of the service in the US. Currently in Europe, users can get the service for free (that is, if they're willing to endure accompanying ads and a strict limit of ten hours per month). If and how this structure will change in the US remains a big, burning question - but one that will be answered tomorrow.

Unlike Napster, this service is (at least in UK, but probably US now too) 100% legal. And free as in free beer.

This could crush LastFM, Pandora, MOG, Rdio, etc. Heck, might sink iTunes a bit. Key word however is could: the US market may already be saturated and Spotify may be too late to get any real market share...

yeah! but how can it be free? it doesn't make any sense......maybe what they're trying to say is that they will charge a monthly fee otherwise it's going to make all others go out of business and besides, how can they afford it!

      hello

Just a heads up to everyone. I've been using Grooveshark (grooveshark.com) for awhile now and love it. If you all are waiting for spotify, check it out. All free and legal as well.

      hello
My understanding is that the "free" service is limited to the web browser and is ad supported just like Pandora and Slacker radio. The unrestricted service is $5 per month and cell phone access is $10 per month.

I've also been using grooveshark for months and am unsure how this is different, besides having no monthly hours limit whatsoever.

I just signed up for premium. This is better than Pandora because you can actually CHOOSE the tracks you want. It's like a subscription to all the music in iTunes for $10 and you can sync the tracks you want to your phone rather than /buying/ them... or just stream them. Yeah this is SO much better.

Don't get to happy to early.
It is free to use for up to 10 hours a month, after that it is fee based.

Anyone know why "Artist Radio" isn't showing up as a feature?! I have a premium acct and all the reading I'm doing says it should be there.

Never mind... they are having licensing issues in the US and it's not an available feature yet. Damn.

I just went through my ACL (Austin City Limits Festival) custom line up and found almost every artist on Spotify and now have a playlist with all their music. That was much easier than spending $500 on iTunes.
