  • iChatr Pulled From App Store Over "Inappropriate" Use

It will come as little surprise to many that the iChatr app has been removed by Apple. To be sure, nothing was wrong with the app itself. The problem, however, had to do with how people were using it. Often likened to Chatroulette in concept, iChatr lets users randomly connect with other users via the iPhone 4 - sort of like what an internet dating service would provide, minus all the needless attention on predetermined compatibility.

As it turns out, Apple felt it had no choice but to pull the plug after one too many complaints were filed noting that users were... shall we say, using iChatr inappropriately. As reported by 9to5Mac, "The iChatr application has currently been removed from the App Store due to reports of a number of users exposing themselves during the random video chat sessions." Oh, the joys of a front-facing smartphone camera! And unless the developer figures out a way to curb this unfortunate trend, it looks as though iChatr won't be able to call the App Store home. Of course, it is a safe bet that any app capable of randomly pairing iPhone 4 owners in a video chat will ultimately have similar problems.

A few days after iChatr was released, I was contacted by more than a few iChatr users who expressed their concern with the company they found themselves keeping. Although no one reported the same problem to me that allegedly caused Apple to swiftly yank the app, one MMi reader bluntly put it this way: "I've never met creepier people in my life." To be fair, it's nearly impossible to fault the app's makers, Apple, or the iPhone 4 for this issue. Whenever random video chats are possible, the possibilities (good or bad) are endless. And it's only a matter of time before incidents like these are "exposed" - pun intended.

Lol there are still apps like this in the AppStore? Than what was the whole reason for apple pulling ichatr if there are still others like it in the AppStore lol...wow.

Apple is too reactionary and a few complaints should not drive their decisions. If folks are not happy with an App stop using it. Dont call apple to complain.

This underscores the need for open platform and jailbreak. These situations tend to work themselves out given time. The App owners should police complaints and block IMEI when inappropriate use is discovered. Its should not be the case that everyone looses out.

BTW... this is not an endorsement of what was happening.

Stupid Internet sick predators. The show to catch a predator shows how sick these people are. It's a shame to have apps pulled but with this type of crap I'd rather be safe than sorry. And for those that are bashing this news story. Honestly ask your self what you would be posting about apple if they left it and kids/women were harmed, killed ect because of it. Personally I think it's a safe idea to pull it. Yes there are other ways out there that these sick discusting people pray by why add fuel to the fire.

Lastly perhaps apple should turn the death grip into a death option. Someone uses the phone to pray on innocents and BAMM.... They get death gripped until the police arrive to take them to prison where the prison population can handle them as they wish.

      Just saying...

So you'll be on dateline NBC or lockup raw trying to get adseg so the prison population don't get to you for indecency to a minor? Really?!? I think it's just sick to even want to expose to people when everyone knows most of the users are minors.

Parental Control ! Parental Control ! Parental Control !

Ugh. People learn to use it. If your minor sees something inappropriate it is your own damn fault. Even I know better than to hand my daughter my phone with anything that could be questionable accessible to her.

On a lighter note ... Let's all be big brothers here and make them show ID before flashing our junk at them! ( Don't forget to screenshot it so that you can CYA. I knew Apple built that feature in for a reason ... )

Apps should be used at your own risk. If you don't like it don't used it.

I can honestly see how Apple is pulling the plug here. It's called C.Y.A!!! And that's what corporate giants MUST DO!!

Maybe Apple should remote kill all machines that have visited porn sites too? What do ya think?

I sure hope your little girl doesn't watch TV, use the internet, or even go outside your house. She will be exposed to bad things! Come on people! I hope you don't really believe the post you made. Everyone is exposed to everything unless you keep em' caged up in your house with no outside media. The corporate giants need to leave the censorship to the adults. Your little girl shouldn't be using someone else's iPhone in the first place. And if she is, I would hope the owner would be aware of the app since they downloaded it.
The main point here is people need to be responsible for themselves and their children. You should not rely on big corporations, schools or governments to regulate your common sense issues in life!

I thought they did. I could've sworn that I had to 'ok' a warning before download.

I was suprised that there were quite a few females on this. About every 3rd or 4th person. But in between were 10 year old kids followed by the inappropriate.

So you take away your daughters ipod or iPad. No one is arguing parent control. Nor was I arguing for removal. Parent control or not sick a$$holes screaming it's parents fault for not locking them up till their of age is not justification for them to pray on kids! Interesting thought though...teenagers shouldn't have a life or phones. I think sick discusting predators shouldn't live. How about them apples?

But you are correct! Only I would word it parent involvement and communication. And leave the rest that out smart the kids or parents on this to Smith and Wesson. Now that would be a cool app. Oh well until then guess the anologue version will do. ;-)
