Well also keep in mind that Apple/Foxconn DOES recycle parts. So there is a slight, very slight chance you could get a phone after week 40 that has the old iBoot. Most people are going to be the ones getting warranty replacements. Unfortunately, I have caught Apple about a half dozen times now that sells an iPhone as new but in fact it is a refurbished unit. They bare a nifty signature on the mainboard from the tech who tested the board after it was re-built. Problem is, how do you approach apple about it when by their standards, opening the phone voids the warranty?

So to clarify and add more details...

My phone is absolutely "41" and definitely worked on pwnage JB w/ blackra1n unlock (flawless for both!). With Melech's added info I can also say that my swapped phone was a warranty replacement. I posted a while about having the glass UNDERNEATH my screen appear cracked. I took it in and the replacement part wasn't in stock so the Genius offered to do a swap with a warranty replacement. I asked her if it was refurbished or new, the basic overall condition. She gave a generic answer of "these are so new that it's most likely not any reused parts since the only reusable part is the mainboard". So I guess there's no way for me to conclusively say the condition of my phone but it's brand new to me, new battery, new casing, new everything else. I guess the only hint at a reused mainboard would be the non-tether wk41 JB part?

Thanks to Confucius, Windmeel and Melech for all the added info. I'm sure other people who swap their phones may be enjoy hearing that warranty swap's can still JB even after week40.

P.S. I am female. Can I not be referred to as a "he" anymore? Otherwise I'll cry... --sarcasm--

Apologies for getting your gender wrong - I really shouldn't assume.

What are the first 3 digits of your serial number?

      Thanks

^It's okay. I've already been called "he" or "him" a few times on the forums so I figured I'd throw in the clarification. Not really offended, just like to be accurate. :-)

First 5 of SN: 5K941 .... ends like my old SN "C3NS" but I assume that's because it's an iPhone 3GS?

      Thanks

Melech - check the first two digits of any you suspect of being refurbs.

Official refurbs start 5K or 5G - they do not change the Bootloader of refurbs so you can't tell when the phone was made if the s/no starts 5K or 5G.

Is blackra1n official from dev team? I don't see it on dev-team site.

^ you know I thought it was weird that it started "5K" since my old SN has 5 digits for the first alphanumerics... so I definitely have a refurbed iPhone? I mean Apple's "refurbed" isn't the worst thing ever but I definitely thought I was getting a brand new iPhone. Oh well, like I said before, everything else is new and Apple is good with their refurbished items (from what I understand) and it works/looks perfect. I'm actually getting ready for a resell once my cousin gets in from Hong Kong and brings me a freshly factory unlocked iPhone :-)

BlackRA1n/BlackSn0w are not by the Dev Team - that's why you don't see them there.
      They are by Geohot

new phones have all numeric refurbs start 5K or 5G (so I believe).
A friend of mine used to refurb meters and when they were sold new they were sold as other standard or grade A which were suitable for weights and measures. As he did each refurb manually he made sure they were all grade A when he finished but they were sold as standard - so there isn't necessarily anything wrong with refurbs, but it does mean you can't tell the iBoot version from the week number.

after my restore last night (to fix corrupt sync files) Everything worked.

I did everything the same way as before, but I never lost wifi... All is Good.

      Thanks everyone.

Sorry guys, I'm sure my answer is in here somewhere and I am actively playing catchup on the thread here but, am I correct that unless I got lucky having a new 3Gs with a "Week 41" boot loader means I'm SOL for "Blackra1n R3" to Jailbreak right? I'm not unlocked and on AT&T's network.. Thanks guys. I'm going to hate life with an unjailbroken iPhone

Same thing happened to me as well. On the second time through the process...I chose "not" to install snow from the blackra1n program, but rather installed snow through cydia, then installed...all went well then, no problems.

Me too, and I also realized since updating to 3.1.2 my GPS no longer works.
