  • iPhone 3GS . . . Waterproof?! No Way!

Apple apparently forgot to introduce another fancy new feature of the iPhone 3GS besides the 'oleophobic' finish, iPhone 3GS is waterproof as well, wait what?!

A youtube user named KhenaKara took his brand new iPhone 3GS on video recording trip by the pool side and while shooting, it accidently fell into the pool. To his surprise, nothing happened to the phone at all . . . The phone was still recording and worked perfectly as usual. Though the phone had a rubber case around, there was no other kind of waterproof protection on it!

Even after that incident, his iPhone works regularly. However, he lost his warranty, which might trouble him in the long run.

P.S. Folks don't try this at home. The iPhone is definitely not supposed do it

I can say from my own experience that if you have a really good case on your phone and manage to get it out of the water quickly, most of the time will not damage your phone. I cannot tell you how many times I have dropped my phone into my dogs water bowl while feeding him. I have a case that wrap around the entire phone and water doesnt seem to penetrate.

Haha. I dropped my old 3G in a toilet and it still worked fine, but this is quite a funny story

After a day of boating, I had my 3GS in my pocket (forgot it was in there), went in to the Chesapeake Bay to load my boat on my trailer and it was water logged. No cover on it either and it actually worked for a few minutes! It completely died shortly after that and Apple was kind enough to offer me another at full price. Lesson learned! So I bought a Otter Box case, now I'm good.

Dropped my 3G in tub. Worked great for a couple of weeks and then started to act up. Still kinda comes and goes, however, I'm still using it!
Just to let everybody know, Apple put two water sensors in the phone (one on the top viewable through the phone jack and one on the bottom viewable alongside the sync edge board) and they can tell if it took a dive. The sensors turn red after the phone sees excessive fluid.

knowing which case could help also. most cases do a good job at doing the simple task of covering exposed areas. phone jack and dock for example. with those two areas covered,it buys you enough time to recover a phone in water.

Actually.. apple put four water sensors in the phone. there are two visible ones on the outside. one in the headphone jack and one on the bottom, but there are also two other sensors INSIDE the phone one top and bottom behind the screen.

Of course the case protected the phone. The dangerous entries are the speakers and mic. If the iPhone stays for not a long time the case definitely helped.
