  • iOS 5 Brings More Social Network Integration

    A major highlight in the demo of iOS 5 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) was Twitter integration. This was a huge plus for those of us who use Twitter but may have been a useless implementation for those who don't. Recent discoveries in the developer's beta of iOS 5 will strike intrigue for those who don't use Twitter or for the multiple social network users out there.

    AllThingsD reported that a developer tipped them saying that other social networks have been implemented in the developer beta of iOS 5. But to a lesser extent. Not only does the contact field offer a place to put Twitter information but also Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, and Myspace. There's even a feature to add a custom service. The slots in a contact profile with social network information will link you that person's webpage in Safari whether for Facebook, Twitter, or whichever.

    The developer, who remains unnamed, says however that some of these social network plugins are a little buggy. Regardless, Apple has shown that web presence is important and a prominent feature in iOS 5. It is guaranteed that Apple will fix the kinks before the full release of iOS 5.

    The article made a distinct comment that is of interest:

    Imagine entering in your credentials and seeing your social network friends and contacts automatically synced and merged with your phone contacts.
    In regards to the above, the convenience factor is key. No longer will you need features like Facebook Sync to get social network information for your respective contacts. It eliminates a few major features for social networks currently so we shall see how companies like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. will respond to this feature.

      That would be the hope. However I can't say and have no information in that regard. Keep posted as I'm sure information about this will surface to a great extent.

      ok thank you for keeping the iphone world up to date with this. But also is there any news if there will be release for the ios 5 beta jailbreak? or a guide to do it.

      When something of this nature comes out, I'll be on it. But for the time being, the tethering component and jailbreak utility is strictly for the developers working on it.

      Hopefully it will allow you to select multiple social networks. Say I want to post on Facebook and Twitter instead of just making us choose only one. Also, if anything, Myspace should be removed..no one uses that anymore.

      Nice! This is much needed- I thought that just integrating Twitter was stupid unless Apple went all the way with this and integrated more social networking stuff.

      Just hearing about twitter the other day made me finally make the decision to go to Android. Now I see a list of multiple yuppie tracking networks, no thanks. Apple just lost my business.

      But what if you don't want all your Facebook friends in your Address Book? They're there on Facebook for a reason. I don't use Facebook Sync, and sure as heck hope that iOS 5 doesn't force it.

      what an idiotic reason... android has twitter and Facebook integration. If you don't want integration - don't use it; if you do - now you can. If you are going to switch at least come up with plausible reason.

      I don't want any social sites on my phone. I don't use any of them. I hope where will be a way of disabling that feature.

      Maybe some manufacturer-altered version of Android does, but pure Android doesn't have such features integrated...and it if it did, I'm sure you would be able to completely remove them from the system. I am also switching because Apple is Nazi about apps and their legality (Checkpoint App to show you where illegal DUI checkpoints are). Not that I use it personally, but I believe in freedom. We shouldn't have to jailbreak to have what we want. If you open up the platform, of course stupid people will mess up their phones, but it's not hard for those people to just restore.

      U won't find an android without twitter or Facebook unless its a custom rom...second, in order to use said rom you have to be rooted (jailbroken) to install...get facts before posting random opinions and expect people to follow ur beliefs...If you don't like apple that's fine but your negativity on an iPhone forum isn't gonna get u anywhere.

      Also, DUI checkpoints aren't illegal...maybe the way some conduct searches, and some feel they need city permission to close down a road...but they aren't illegal.

      Stop drinking and drivin and you won have a problem with them or need an app for that (which are now banned but u can get from icloud services)

      1. I can drive however I want, drunk or sober.
      2. I don't do so, I grew up, and no, I never got in trouble for it or nothing happened to "wake me up."
      3. Checkpoints are illegal search and seizures. They presume guilt. I have nothing to hide but I prefer a right to privacy...hence why I absolutely hate social networks.
      4. Show me documentation of social network integration into Android itself. Maybe some apps do it, but the OS itself doesn't.
