  • Apple Rumored to Be Seeing Red Over Best Buy's iPad 2 Sales Stunt

Our friends at Crunch Gear are reporting that Apple's ire has been raised by an iPad 2 sales stunt pulled by Best Buy personnel. A Best Buy employee claims that the store was intentionally hoarding reserves and holding off on selling the supply it had in stock. Why? That much isn't clear. And it is, indeed, monumentally baffling.

When Apple got wind of Best Buy telling customers that supplies were depleted (even though they weren't), executives in Cupertino got angry. Very angry. Chief among the reported hotheads was Tim Cook, the acting chief in Steve Jobs' absence. If the report in question is presenting accurate information, here's what we know: Apple is "blacklisting" Best Buy on the iPad 2 for the time being.

The tipster says the Apple rep at his branch of Best Buy "confirmed the story." But much like the editorial discretion of Crunch Gear suggests, it's important to take this sort of report with a grain of salt until we start noticing a complete and utter lack of iPad 2s at Best Buy.

Incredibly, Best Buy is making no shortage of headlines in terms of angering Apple. Earlier this week it was reported that Best Buy pulled a controversial ad from the promotional page for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, a small but still established competitor of the iPad.

The ad showed an iPad-like product and a keyboard duct-taped together. Next to it was the Transformer. Above the tablets were the words: “Like that. But better.” The Transformer has a clip-on keyboard, while the iPad does not come with a keyboard, although Apple sells keyboard docks for the device.
It isn't known if Apple had something to do with the yanked ad, but we can't imagine the boys and girls in Cupertino would let this one slide if they knew about it.

      I second that.

if Apple pulls the ipad2 from best buy, that's actually good news cause then best buy could push Android tablets and even lower prices.

I doubt that they would sell Android tablets for lower prices, but they might start giving them away for free since no one wants one.

You may get one in a few more weeks! I also reserved one from BB because I had over $200 worth of gift cards there, but 3 weeks later and they still kept telling me they havent gotten any in. So I just said f*** BB and found one at a nearby Walmart. Theres a thread on BB's own forum with many angry customers over this. I'll use my gift cards to buy video games or something from them and then I'll be done with them for good.

      What you mean like this?

iPad has always had a keyboard dock that isn't as Bulky as that one...

Why do people believe this ad as if we never had a dock and needed duct tap keyboard...

Plus the thing is a tablet....with that dock it looks like a laptop....if I wanted a laptop...I would get a laptop....

Samsung Galaxy 8.9 will sell for $469 and the 10.1 will sell for $499.

as for no one wanting one, the same thing was said about Android phones which now outsell the iphone.

If by "outselling" you mean "is installed on more phones that are available for free or $49 with plan" then, yeah.

McDonald's sells 100x more burgers than their closest competitor. Doesn't mean it's NOT fatty horse meat.

Not to mention this, the ZAGGmate iPad Case (which is super sexy if I might say so...)---->

There are options... that ad is dumb and poorly researched.

Granted their customer service might not be the greatest, but when I can walk in Frys and 99.9% of the time they have what I'm looking for while saving at LEAST $20 on computer equipment (except Apple because of their tight hold on pricing) and games, I'm all for it. Long live Frys!
Frys is ****. The customer service is horrible and they are always a higher price then best buy. But this might just be the one I'm my area.

Im astounded at the people on here who want to put this in apples lap.... how is it apples fault that best buy is holding on to stock and not selling it? im at a loss...

and that ad is garbage. I dont understand how a keyboard is a selling point. if you really need a keyboard that bad that it decides what brand you choose, buy a laptop. pretty simple concept. or as the other people said get your head out of the sand and realize there are keyboards available for the ipad. (Personally I would stay away from zagg as their customer service horrendous.)

I personally would rather shop at a store where I know I'm getting a working product. And with that I say, long live Best Buy! ;-)
Odd, dont know what location that is but the one near me isn't like that. Every product I buy there I know for a fact is BRAND NEW. I'm very anal about that. Yes they do sell open packaged items, but they also have a giant "returned item" sticker on them with even greater savings (if you want to take that chance).

Must just be in your area. Fry's is typically 10-15% less across the board in Austin. I use this to my advantage because BB has their price match plus 10% policy where if I find it cheaper somewhere else within 30 days they will refund me the difference plus 10%. So I will get a quote from Frys, buy something at BB... show customer service my quote and get a refund plus 10% on the spot!

They outsell the iphone because android has many different devices compared to the iphone they has only two models still available in stores.

LMFAO!!! You are saying Best Buy doesn't make a profit selling iPads? You're saying wholesale cost for iPads is really full sticker price? What are you smoking and where can I get some? Cost is well below sticker price and Best Buy most certainly turns a profit selling iPads. And you're cocky attitude is just a bad joke when you spew idiocy like this.
