  • RIM to Challenge iPad 2 with PlayBook Tablet Starting April 19th

Apple's chunk of the tablet market share may take another hit next month as Research in Motion readies it's answer to the iPad. On April 19th, the popular BlackBerry smartphone maker will introduce (to both US and Canadian buyers) the long-awaited PlayBook tablet through major retailers like Best Buy, which similarly offers first and second generation iPads.

RIM is promoting the PlayBook as the first-ever “professional-grade” tablet computer. Despite the haughty tone RIM is already striking in its promotional material, the company is not looking to best Apple in terms of pricing. In fact, the PlayBook starts in price at $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model. Sound familiar? That's what Apple is charging for the low-end iPad 2 model. Additionally, the PlayBook's 32GB and 64GB models will retail for $599 and $699, respectively.

According to RIM, the PlayBook boasts a 1GHz dual-core processor, 7” 1024x600 WSVGA capacitive LCD touch screen, and, of course, the Blackberry Tablet OS. Additionally, there are dual cameras (rear and front facing) that can shoot full 1080p footage (yes, that's an improvement over the iPad 2's video potential). Incredibly, the PlayBook's retail push will be even bigger than the iPad's (both generations, too). 20,000 stores in the US and Canada will sell the PlayBook. In addition to the aforementioned Best Buy, you can find the RIM tablet at Staples, RadioShack, Office Depot, AT&T, Sprint Nextel, and Verizon Wireless. By comparison, the iPad 2 is presently available in only 10,000 stores.

Alkesh Shah, an analyst at Evercore Partners Inc., tells Bloomberg that RIM may sell 250,000 PlayBooks in its first quarter and more than five million during the full fiscal year. “RIM doesn’t have the cult-like following of Apple so I doubt there will be lines outside the stores,” Shah says. “But feedback has been positive from people who’ve seen it and I think it’ll be a product that starts with slower sales than the iPad 2 but may exceed expectations by year-end.”

For the same price as the low end iPad 2? I rather just get the iPad 2 then.

A crappy limited device with half the display size (and probably quality) of iPad 2, selling for same price? No thanks.

Apple has a cult following for a reason, the same reason that RIM does not.
As for me I am very happy with my iPad 2, I'll pass on this one RIM.

No Apple has a cult following them because they can make they're products seem like their different then the competitions. Please tell me what's so much good about a Mac vs a windows. Or a more relevant example a Xoom.

Even though it has more hardware packed inside, i was on the phone with Xbox live support on my PC and it crashed, i asked them if i should go on my macbook or wait 5 mins for a reboot, they told me to wait.

Moral of story: I'd rather have a little less hardware that runs really well then having a pack-a-punched computer with no software to run that thing.

Is math such a lost art?

Area of iPad screen is about 45.16 sq. in
Area of Playbook screen is about 22.14 sq. in (which is right about half, I'd say)

When trying to make someone look stupid, be sure not to make yourself look stupid.

Nothing really stands out on the PlayBook. The iPad 2 will still outsell it.

I have decided I hate you more then any other poster on any forum on the internet. Your a stupid troll and a Pirate. Dont come to a forum about Apple Devices and ask what makes apple better then the rest. Go take your pirated music and apps, your Windows computer and Your Moto Xoom and shoved them up your *** and go to what ever internet troll cave you came from.
      That's awesome and true....lol

I guess they put a good effort in the playbook but at the end of the day it just falls short. I guess they can always try again next year

Falls short of what? If they're primarily trying to sell it as an enterprise companion device to blackberry users, I'd say they've got some good selling points, and a good product.

Trying to compete in the consumer market with the iPad? Yeah, good luck with that.

It's been said for a while that a good way to compete with Apple is to offer a product or service that isn't yet well covered by one of their offerings. Of all the iPad competitors so far, I think the playbook is one of the few to be able to make that claim. They offer an appeal to an audience that was not satisfied by the Galaxy Tab or the Xoom (or even the iPad).

I'm not saying I'm even remotely interested in getting one (not a BB user), but I do recognize that they're potentially offering something that hasn't really been offered before. I'm anxious to see how they do.

**** RIM, Apple FTW. People will end up bumming off the PlayBook, mainly because it has BlackBerry Messenger, Flash Player etc, which no-one gives two flying f*cks about.
