  • iPhone 5 To Have Curved Screen?

Digitimes is reporting today the next iPhone may have a curved screen (old fan-made mock-up pictured above).

Digitimes, citing industry sources, is claiming Apple has purchased 200 or 300 glass-cutting machines. The expensive glass-cutting equipment will be used by glass makers wary of making such an expensive investment on their own. According to their source, the machines will be stored at "associated assembly plants and will be brought online once yield rates for the production of curved glass reaches a satisfactory level."

This of course is in contrast to other reports, and even Digtimes' previous reports, that the next iteration of the iPhone would use the same form factor as the iPhone 4. However, if Apple does implement curved displays they would most likely resemble Samsung's "Countour Display," implemented in the Nexus S. The idea behind the slightly concave glass of the Nexus S is that it fits better in the hand when held against the head.

While a slight design change would be welcome, concave and curved displays traditionally deal with glare and reflection problems. There is a reason CRT monitors and televisions aren't too popular anymore (although those are convex).

So how do you suppose gaming on the iPhone and touch will be effected? I'm doubtful they will do this. Sliding finger in a bowl instead of a flat surface to draw.

Agreed. The... erm... "unique" mock-up isn't helping things either.

I just can't see Apple going curved display glass--it'll almost certainly mess with their "anorexia" they try to embody in their designs--thinner in one place means thicker elsewhere.

EDIT: Sure, Apple's uses curved convex backs a lot, but not on the front display. Nor can I remember Apple using a concave design on their touch-based stuff.

Yeah so do anti-glare screen protectors. And they don't make the phone look retarded.

I think a curved screen would be a nice change and a curved body as well. the iphone body is kinda boring now it needs a update.

I'll pass, I like laying my phone flat on my desk. Doesn't wobble like most phones do.

Funny. Theyre saying curved screens help with glare, but I still see plenty of glare on those phones in that pic.

I don't really want a curved screen. It's cool, but doesn't really sound like Apple.

No matter if they call it the iPhone 4s or the iPhone 5 it's still the iPhone 5 because it's the fifth generation iPhone.

I see people putting this in their pocket, then bumping into a counter or something and cracking it in half.

It will be a 5. There are already enough more-than-likely changes to warrant a full model upgrade.
