  • Rumor: Apple Considering Aluminum Back for iPhone 5

Apple is believed to be weighing its options with regard to dumping the present iPhone 4 glass back design in favor of an aluminum back reminiscent of the very first iPhone that debuted almost four years ago. If the change takes place, it will likely happen ahead of the anticipated iPhone 5 launch this summer.

Based on the information possessed by the folks at Taiwan's Economic Daily News, Apple is pushing ahead with an iPhone 5 design that is remarkably similar to the iPod touch. Rumors aside, logic would suggest that Apple may dump their use of glass in favor of aluminum to reduce both the weight of the iPhone 5 and to increase its resistance to scratches. As we've been reading extensively in recent weeks, Apple is apparently taking "scratch resistant" surfaces and coatings very seriously. Consequently, the iPhone 5 will probably be the most scratch-proof handset in the five generation existence of the iPhone.

Although the Taiwanese report is - for some reason - generating hype primarily for the handset's rumored aluminum backing, the same report also dishes on something that - if true - would seemingly be of much greater interest to the majority of iPhone fans and users. According to Taiwan's Economic Daily News, the iPhone 5 will deliver the same A5 processor as the iPad 2, a development that will deliver an entirely new capacity for speed to the handset.

The Apple logo and text start to fade off on the Aluminum backs, so I went back to the glass back with my carbon fiber shielf from fusionofideas.

Would probably help if they used gorilla glass! I've heard the do already but if that's the case then how is my iPhone 4 getting scuffed up when in a CLEAN empty pocket?

Surprised no one suggested this - take a lesson from fine watches - use sapphire - which is MUCH more resilient and scratch resistant than glass. The coat would probably increase slightly but at a $600 price tag (not to mention the portion of the monthly bill apple recieves from AT&T customers) I'm sure they can afford it

Yeah. Keep it basically cosmetically the same as iphone 4 BUT increase screen size by using up some of that black space at top and bottom. Surely could get another 10mm diagonal.

If the do go metal why not that liquid metal thing they bought a couple months ago? That'd be nice... supposedly 200x harder than steel or something... and surley please do not go back to that curved back... invisible screen on that never fit right...

why so? i think the multiple piece design on iphone 4 was the smartest ever. what if u scratch/ damage ur case like previous models. looks like youll be searching for a full housing on ebay not just a back.

and that mock design is HIDEOUS!

I think they should stick to the similar look of the iPhone4 and the back glass part is attractive-different from all the smart phones out there.

Really?!? We're supposed to believe that Apple would go back? They never go back, only change directions.

I can see maybe some new composite material, but there's no way they are going to go with a glorified iPod Touch design.

Also, that mock-up sucks, there's no flash! lol.

If they give it a rounded back again, I'll skip buying it. I loved the quality of the first-gen iPhone, but when they went plastic, the bubble was obnoxious.
