  • 10% of iPhones sold in September to unlockers?
A Piper Jaffray analyst says 10% of all iPhones sold in September were sold to people who were buying them to unlock and resell, reports Apple Insider.

I know I myself have purchased a few which I unlocked and resold. Anyone else?

I'm wondering how they came about getting those numbers.

I don't doubt it. But what did they do; use an exit poll?

Just be careful when you perform the unlocks, that you don't turn the phone over and look at the back. They're watching us... through the iPhone camera!

mmmm .well you iphone is supposed to be on att only ..so total iphone sell total vs the att total iphone customers= 10%.now you see why att was bitchin and apple saw that they was loosing money from kickbacks..thus 1.1.1..and iam in a small town no apple stores have to go to houston to clean house...shoot i did at least 10 hardware unlocks alone .its at least 10%

Well I have a few people from various countries that purchase the phones and I provide the "labor" hours to them. Learned everything here on MMI!

I have a friend who owns a T-Mobile kiosk, and he actually had Apple CALL his customers and him asking if he was selling them unlocked. So do be careful.

I reckon that at least 5000 came to Vancouver BC from Washington state stores and online orders/deliveries to Mail receivers in WA, and then brought across the border by local small biz guys.

There are 1000 ads for iphones on Craigslist in vancouver BC today - and many of those guys have sold at least 50 phones.

My dad have bought about 25 iPhones, after that apple told him something like "hey! you are probably reselling them. We won't sell any more to you". LOL

I can't see how they can keep people from buying, unlocking and reselling them as long as there is demand and people will buy them from 3rd parties.

Apple can certainly limit how many they will sell to you... and so you will need to be creative at purchasing them in quantities that you need. Some stores are imposing a 5-iphone limit but I think that's per day. I'd imagine it would be funny trying to get a different Apple employee at the counter each time you buy a bag o' iphones.

And maybe you could have friends help you buy them as well - but I don't know anything about this.

Another idea: if they ask you what you're doing with all of them just change the subject and ask them when the new Mac Nano is coming out - 'Oh, you can't tell me that? Well I can't tell you what I'm doing with these 40 iPhones either.' That'll fix 'em.

      Yah me neither.

At the end of the day, its a product they want to sell, and people are buying them. Market saturation is the end goal for Apple, I would suppose. Best to have your product in as many hands as possible, whether they be AT&T subscribers' hands, or Orange subscribers' hands.

I did an unlock for my coworker for 30 bucks. I'm not sure if I should try to unlock and resell or not.
