  • 1.1.1 Released

Firmware 1.1.1 was released today. Features include:

    iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
    Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
    Support for TV Out
Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
    New Passcode lock time intervals
    Adjustable alert volume

If you are the owner of an unlocked iPhone, DO NOT UPDATE until we have a viable solution for either relocking and then unlocking after the update, or doing the update without bricking your iPhone. Updating an unlocked iPhone currently WILL BRICK your iPhone.

    The Basics:
    • If you have an unlocked phone, but are using AT&T, updating will NOT brick your iPhone, but you will have to get a new SIM card, as the iPhone will display an incorrect SIM message.
    • If you have an unlocked iPhone, and are running a carrier OTHER than AT&T, updating will NOT brick your iPhone, but it WILL relock your iPhone, and no existing methods will unlock again, so DON'T UPDATE YET.
    • If you have an iPhone LOCKED TO AT&T still, updating your iPhone will work fine. If you have installed 3rd party apps, they will be gone, and no existing methods will reinstall them.
    • No, the developers of the software modding apps have NOT updated their apps within the past 2 hours. When they do you will be notified with a new News story.

Any grown-up, mature person knows that tampering with the SIM or jailbreaking the phone is something you do on your own and expecting negative consequences. You, cry babies, knew the rules of the game before you altered the iPhone/SIM, and Apple, on top of what you already knew, even gave fair warning of the consequences.

You have the chance to choose among 10s and 10s of other smart phones if you thought altering iPhone would cause difficulties.

Now, you unlock the SIM, jailbreak it, add apps, you read the possible consequences of such actions, you upgraded the firmware on your phone, and now you bunch of asswipe crybabies whine that you are victims of Apple, of Stever Jobs, of AT&T, you name it.

      Listen buddy,.

      Infek,
Will you tell me what happens? I have not upgraded my firmware yet. However, I am in the same situation as you, where my phone was replaced awhile back...but instead of giving me a new SIM card, they stuck my old one into the new phone. Are you certain that's the cause of your problem? Either case, please let me know what happens. Much appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that they are the same Apple iPod A/V composite cables found on their website. They're $49, but don't ship for another 2-3 weeks.

I honestly doubt this is the cause of his error. Curious to hear how it turns out though.

Okay, I've decided in the end to take the plunge and update my iPhone. However, I decided I might a well document what I BELIEVE is the proper way to do it if all you have done is moded the phone (NOT unlocked it, just moded it with tappapp, jailbroken it, etc).

Okay, this is what I did...

      1. Plugged in the iPhone and let it Sync. This should back up your data (of course, not any of the hacks or their data that you have added - just the data that iTunes knows about)

      2. I held down option and clicked restore. I selected ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates/iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw as the firmware to restore. This avoids doing an update AND restore, and allows you to restore to 1.0.2.

This should ERASE ANY AND ALL STUFF YOU HAVE added - it does NOT touch the baseband stuff, so no, it will not solve any problems for you if you unlocked it, but it should bring those who JUST JAILBROKE their phone back to a regular 1.0.2 phone without any mods. Yes, it will remove the installer.app you cannot remove from installer.app (it only allows update). Basically, this will give you an empty, blank phone.

      3. Waited for it to restore the firmware. Then it asked m about restoring my backup and that reactivated the phone with AT&T (actually, just grabbed the activation info from the backup data). I then aborted the sync since it might need to do it again anyway after the update...

      4. Clicked on Update. This is what is going on now. It is downloading 1.1.1 and will then install it. Since i am going that far, I guess I can upgrade my iTunes to 7.4.2 anyway since I am breaking my ringtones. I will do that after.

I will post the results, but this seems to me to be the SAFEST way to update your phone i you have done simple hacks, and I see no reason why this should NOT work.

HOWEVER - IF YOU HAVE UNLOCKED YOUR PHONE, STAY WITH 1.0.2 - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FOLLOW THESE STEPS...

Do you not use the headphone jack for the tv out on the iphone. Anyone got it working yet? How... thx.
      No, again, sheesh...
The fourth lead in your headphone jack is or the MICROPHONE people, there is no video out in the headphone jack, it is different than the 5th gen iPods because it MUST HAVE A MICROPHONE.... (and since they did it anyway, they changed it on all the 6th gen iPods as well )

Agree wholeheartedly. You took the plunge, Apple warned you, you know enough to come to this site and saw all the posts about it, and you still took the plunge....

Apple is a BUSINESS, they have a CONTRACT with AT&T. They are developing software for a phone that they know EXACTLY what the profile is. They could care less about anyone who moded it, and they are under no obligation to do anything for you, the moder, so stfu already... Steve owes you NOTHING. If you bought a phone with plans on modding it and feel somehow that ou were not warned, there is a reason all these devices have legal contracts - you are SUPPOSED to read them!

And I still don't understand what will happen if it is bricked and I don't have my orginal sim card that came with the iphone..

hmmm trying to be patient and wait for devs for a forsure fix...

Yep, that worked fine, no problems. Right now I am synching my 6.5 GB of data back to my phone. So, again, i you have a moded phone and want to try the SAFEST (although not guaranteed) way to update, follow the instructions above...

      and, oh wow....
It kept my desktop picture I downloaded, so I was WRONG about it wiping all the data. Whoodathunkit..

my phone was locked with original sim, and had been heavily modded with all the apps, themes, ringtones and more. I updated just fine without anything going wrong. I did loose all the apps i had , i am back to all stock.

My guess is part of the baking up of your data is of the current background picture, a standard phone data type. Everything WAS wiped... I stand by my point that this is the safest thing to do

i never unlocked the phone or "hacked" the phone. The only thing that I did do is install a custom ringtone or two through makeiphoneringtone. i guess this would be considering modding.

The most ****** up thing is that i have been able to update and haven't touched my phone since the first 1.02 came out. I have posted previous things but never was successful so I stopped.

I'll be going to at&t tomorrow to ***** slap someone since I'm paying for service and cannot use it. If worse comes to worse I'll just pay for another sim card and be done with it.

I also cannot "downgrade" to an older firmware since it doesn't work.

the only different thing is that the at&t card that is in my iphone isn't the one that I received when I activated service. I have restored my phone quite a bit due to wanting to do fresh installs of things... I wonder if this is how they are pegging cards?

If they do not provide me with another sim card then I have no choice but to cancel service since I won't be paying for something I won't be able to use.

      Don't update your phone if:

      - it's unlocked
      - it's locked, but you have a different sim than what came in it.

It's as simple as that. If you fall into one of those categories....WAIT.

I updated my heavily modded phone and had no problems. Say goodbye (for now) to your apps though.

Performance does seem to be better, and the double click on the home button rules.

I'm in the same boat as you, i modded.. same sim as when i bought it.. no unlock. But i'm still too scared to update from the horror stories i've read all day. I'll wait until there's a fix.. c'mon Dev!
