If you are the owner of an unlocked iPhone, DO NOT UPDATE until we have a viable solution for either relocking and then unlocking after the update, or doing the update without bricking your iPhone. Updating an unlocked iPhone currently WILL BRICK your iPhone.

    The Basics:
    • If you have an unlocked phone, but are using AT&T, updating will NOT brick your iPhone, but you will have to get a new SIM card, as the iPhone will display an incorrect SIM message.
    • If you have an unlocked iPhone, and are running a carrier OTHER than AT&T, updating will NOT brick your iPhone, but it WILL relock your iPhone, and no existing methods will unlock again, so DON'T UPDATE YET.
    • If you have an iPhone LOCKED TO AT&T still, updating your iPhone will work fine. If you have installed 3rd party apps, they will be gone, and no existing methods will reinstall them.
    • No, the developers of the software modding apps have NOT updated their apps within the past 2 hours. When they do you will be notified with a new News story.

Meh, I didn't feel like being brave.

I started with a pretty heavily modded, but still-att locked 1.0.2

      1) put the root user password back to the default
      2) uninstalled all 3rd party stuff, except for the above, which I couldn't
      3) turned off phone lock and sim lock
      4) shift-click restored 1.0.2
      5) let itunes put the backed up data back on
      6) installed 1.1.1

      no probs.

If it turns out (I doubt it) that 1.1 can't be cracked so we can reapply/apply mods I'm not upgrading EVER. The dev team has made my iphone a lot more useful than anything apple has come out with.
I encourage everyone to donate to the dev team if you can (no not a member and don't produce any of the apps).

Hello apple !there is a market for third party apps stop being so stupid.

One more thing to note. I updated my modded but locked to at&t iphone to the new firmware, but kept my itunes at version 7.4.1 (or whichever version had the workaround for making free ringtones). Now, even though itunes has my free ringtones in the ringtones directory, and is set to sync to the phone, the tones don't show up in the list on the phone settings. Bummer; I wonder how apple accomplished that feat of devastation?

I'm curious about the IMEI stuff. I have a jailbreak'd, unlocked phone, but currently my IMEI in the Settings->General->Info still matches the IMEI etched onto the case. Is this normal for an unlocked phone? Does the 0000 IMEI only happen once you try to update to 1.1.1?

      Thanks!

i had no idea that updating would screw my iphone. I did not unlock i just installed the apps onto it. Now its a brick and i want to kill steve jobs. Im researching all over and i cant find anyone who can unbrick it. When you brick it changes the imei number to a different one so learn from me DONT UPDATE YOUR IPHONE IF YOU HAVE INSTALLER/3rd PARTY APPS ON YOUR PHONE

No, the generic cable will NOT work. You don't even need to test. Nor will the old Apple 4 connector 1/8 cable with the 3 RCA jacks on the other end....
The 4th contact on the iPhone is used for a microphone people, not for video out. Not only is there no way it would work on the iPhone no matter what, they took that feature away from all the iPods and now only offer it through the Dock connector.

sgammella i guess you have to wait now for the DEV team to bring the new software in.

Does anybody know when are the DEVS going to realease the unlcoking software for 1.1.1?

Sure it's bricked? I've seen a lot of people that kept messing around, trying different things and finally got it to work. From upgrading/downgrading itunes to other things. Just a thought. And even if it is, i'm sure there will be a fix soon.. good luck man.

You know, it's really sad what apple's done...why screw us over so badly? I mean all we are doing is making our iPhones more productive...I understand if they don't like phone to be SIM unlocked...but messing up your phone just for having 3rd party applications on it...that's horrible. I went to the apple store to see what they'd tell me about my bricked phone and they just told me I was screwed...that they won't touch it.

I undertand it's no longer covered under the warranty...but why can't i pay them to fix it? After all, it's just software...it's not like I messed with the hardware...they can just erase everything and bring it back.

this is what apple's done: rather than making applications everyone wants on their phone, like chat, ability to customize icons and wallpapers and stuff, games...etc...rather than doing the stuff that tons of hackers have done from home...they decide to screw everyone over that's adopted these applications....freaking assholes they are...I really hate Steve Jobs right now...this isn't fair!

Well, I was one of the first to do it.
Regret it, should have never installed the unlock app, and now my phone is at the "Insert Unlocked SIM" or whatever screen. Apple people are asses, and very well trained to be, and so here I am .. very stuck, and very annoyed. I am pissed. Now, I have to put my phone contract on hold, don't have another phone so I'm screwed, and really should have waited. In any case, .. I learned a good lesson about Apple today. They suck horribly when it comes to customers.

Wow. Yea yea, I know, I should have waited, but wow.

IS there no WAY? Anyone out there can change the IMEI back to what it should be, or undo this sort of half bricked update problem?

Seriously,, ... I am really distressed now. This sucks.
We have to wait 2 weeks, 3 maybe for someone to figure it out?

Is there any way to just wipe EVERYTHING from the phone so as not to have any evidence of the 0000 problem or anything for that matter so that apple will handle it?

I have been treated so poorly by their tech people, they almost made me out to be a criminal. I am pissed..
      Gah ...

      New SIM, .. = nothing.
      Firmware downgrade = no go.
      Kind of bricked = yep.

      Damn.

Just thought I'd point out that there is a file called, "iPhoneUpdater.log" that may provide some clues as to what changes are being made and/or what may have failed during the firmware update process.

      It's located in:

      CDocuments and Settings\%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Updater Logs
