Firmware 1.1.1 was released today. Features include:

Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
    Support for TV Out
Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
    New Passcode lock time intervals
    Adjustable alert volume

If you are the owner of an unlocked iPhone, DO NOT UPDATE until we have a viable solution for either relocking and then unlocking after the update, or doing the update without bricking your iPhone. Updating an unlocked iPhone currently WILL BRICK your iPhone.

    The Basics:
    • If you have an unlocked phone, but are using AT&T, updating will NOT brick your iPhone, but you will have to get a new SIM card, as the iPhone will display an incorrect SIM message.
    • If you have an unlocked iPhone, and are running a carrier OTHER than AT&T, updating will NOT brick your iPhone, but it WILL relock your iPhone, and no existing methods will unlock again, so DON'T UPDATE YET.
    • If you have an iPhone LOCKED TO AT&T still, updating your iPhone will work fine. If you have installed 3rd party apps, they will be gone, and no existing methods will reinstall them.
    • No, the developers of the software modding apps have NOT updated their apps within the past 2 hours. When they do you will be notified with a new News story.

how true, still running 1.0 and rocking every app I need without a hitch. I love the iphone, but I have never seen a company work so hard to ensure that their product is used the way they want. I mean come on apple, the 3rd party apps are normal for all other phones on the planet except yours. eh, my rant is over. I just hope that they don't incorporate some sort of required update in order to just sync with itunes....that seems like a logical step for apple

Dear old Doug - did anyone else ever dedicate a book to their Macintosh, I wonder?

When that happens, I'll sell my phone and go back to a flip phone. Forget it. its not worth it. I don't like being controlled. I'm happy right now, with an iphone that is not activated...because...well...I did it myself. The minute apple decides to update my phone for me, you won't see me around anymore.

Am I right in reading that there have been instances where people with locked, AT&T phones that have only been modded with 3rd party apps have shown a sim card error? That's strange, no?

There's one thing I noticed about the iPhone that no one seems to be talking about. The battery is soldered in providing a constant source of power to the phone. I wonder if killing the power by removing the battery and shorting the leads of the phone to drain any other power would allow for a "reset" of the memory so it could at least be worked with. (that's the EE in me talking. Forget the software, reset the hardware)

Isn't that something similar to how they designed Pandora's battery for the PSP brick hack?

Joe, a simple yes or no answer wouldve been nice. I asked since the case you commented was downgrading with a previously unlocked phone that was relocked.

My question was regarding a new phone, no modifications at all, trying the shift-click method... to install 1.0.2 and without internet connection...so it wont detect new Firmware?

      Thx

      !!1.1.1!!

This is stupid. The unlock is not causing damage - The update is. Apple simply found a way to indentify moded iphones and is retaliating.

It is unbeleivable Apple would treat is constumers like this. All we are trying to do is get better coverage and add functionality to our iphones!

Oh, I'm sorry. The quick answer would still be no...Once you upgrade it looks like there is no going back down. At least from itunes. , However if your phone has not yet updated, then yes you can shift click to select your firmware and restore that way. Even if your connected to the internet. You don't have to update...

      Why?

For unmodded phones yes for modded phones why would we be thankful?

yep, thats how I feel about apple already...the modders are what makes this phone desireable, if thats gone, then there is no point to keep the phone for basic cell phone features

      Yep.

The one thing that Apple likes to do is dumb things down and control its users.

Windoze never has made patches to undo windoze mods so why would Apple? Its because they have to they signed a contract with AT&T and if they don't actively try and weed out the "illegal phones" they are in violation.

Can you say AT&T sue APPLE? I can. A few years from now none of this will matter.

Apple is just bitter because its end users are just as smart as they are!
