  • Unlocked iPhones Bricked by new Updates?
Apple is reportedly saying they have "discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed."

What does this mean to all us unlocked iPhone users? It means do NOT update your firmware yet, is all. The update is due out this week sometime, and iTunes doesn't force you to update, so just don't. Within a few days, there will be a fix out for upgrading unlocked iPhone's to the new firmware, not to worry. Just make sure that when it first comes out, you don't do the update yet.

So here is my question. If I unlocked my phone with erica sadun's unlock (the one in the guide here at modmyi) but subsequently restored my iphone (which in the faq to the guide says will relock the phone) should I be worried about the update bricking my phone? If anyone knows if the Erica's method is totally undone by a restore please let me know

According to gizmodo.com, it includes third party apps also

You heard that the new firmware bricks unlocked iphones? Get this: Apple just confirmed to me that running any third-party app at all voids the warranty, and you won't be covered if your iPhone bricks for whatever reason. The reasoning is that Apple cannot distinguish between other third party apps and those that have been confirmed to combine with the new firmware to cause iPhone Brick-itus. (Apple specifically named iUnlock and the GUI version, AnySIM.) What I don't get is how is running an app on an OS X iPhone more dangerous than running third party apps on a Macbook running OS X? I don't know, I'm not a genius, I just play one in my diorama. I don't think there's a way to track use of unauthorized apps, so before you go in for service, restore your iPhone to a born again software virgin status. There you go, iPhone rebels playing with AppTapp--we are all bandits and too dirty for warranty.

There is a big difference between voiding the warranty, and having a firmware update "render the phone inoperable". I can't stress enough, all will be fine, you just have to give it a few days AFTER the update comes through.

Jeez now im worried,i unlocked just to try T-Mobile, didn't like it, now im back on AT&T, can anyone help me understand the relocking guide better? im lost after...
Download the 1.0.2 firmware to your computer and unzip it. It uses a .ipsw extension but your unzip program should still work. Change the extension if you have to.

      Please help!

Don't worry. Just wait a few days after the firmware update before you do it. Let the fix get made. No big deal.

As far as the unlocking part DMCA says you have the right to do that. As far as the warranty it will be interesting to see if someone challenges Apple under the Magnus Moss Warranty act. This was originally aimed at auto manufactures voiding warranties when people added after-market things(stereos, security systems, etc) to autos, don't see why it couldn't apply to electronics.

I guess I should start writing a perl script to save and install all the icons, etc. I think Apple is just putting out new software releases to improve the product, not frustrate the modding community. My expounding of the greatness of the iPhone caused two of my brothers to go get one. They are not geeks like me so they stick to the GUI apps to do mods but they bought it because they saw my mods.
As PF says just wait a while, after all we currently have a very rich experience thanks to the modding community.

poetic_folly you seem pretty confident it's only gonna take a few days. you sure about that? this seems like a pretty intense update and I'm sure the starbucks feature is hella encrypted so people can't start using their wifi networks for internet surfing like people have done with T-Zones

Y'all need to settle down and relax. We all know Apple is going to release software updates from time to time.

The dev pool unlocked the phone once, I'm sure they can do it again.

Again, just relax and wait for Pf gives you the 411 on the update. Once it's released, they'll see what it's all about and what can be done to 'keep things the way they are'.

I just want mine relocked haha, but the problem is i can't follow the guide out there.

Although kudos to Apple for giving us the heads up.

      Guys,

Just relax. Firstly the update hasn't even been released yet. Secondly, as poetic_folly has repeatedly said, just do not update until further development is defined using the new update. The more you whine and worry, the more worked up you are gonna get. Relax, and breathe and enjoy your currently modded phone.

and Apple knows this HOW? by all those customers they turned away because they had modded phones?

      Yeah....

Apple PR is like any company's PR. Lie to the customers, coz most of them are too naive or dumb to not believe you.

i'm not ranting either I've heard personally the straight up ******** that they train Apple store employees to tell their customers.

theyre probably going to come out with some substantial features, such as ichat or flash for safari, because that seems like something most people wouldnt turn down updating for, then theyre gonna be satisfied that the unlockers are going to be sol, till its possibly cracked
