  • Blackberry Messenger May Be Coming to iOS

According to "multiple trusted sources," Research in Motion is poised to bring its extremely popular Blackberry Messenger (lovingly shortened to BBM) to both the iOS and Android platforms. Boy Genius Report reports that it could come to Android within the year, and iOS would follow after due to Apple's more restrictive app-approval process.

The report also mentions that the software might actually come to both of these platforms for free, but RIM has not settled on a definite pricing plan, and may move to a one-time or a recurring pricing plan. BGR adds that "it might seem strange" for the company to bring one of the main selling points of their Blackberry devices to its rival platforms, but RIM might be trying to bring official software to these platforms, instead of copycat applications that currently occupy both OS's app stores.

It seems that BBM for iOS and Android will be a "stripped down" version of the software, and users will still need a Blackberry device for all the features of BBM. But there's a potential that the if RIM provides excellent versions of the app, they could "own the entire messaging app category on every major smartphone OS."

Again, there is no word on timing at this point, but according to the report, the software is, in fact, in the works.

so another messaging app for the iOS? What would the stripped down version offer that the slew of app store messaging apps (or the native one) dont?

Apple just needs to come out with iMessenger... They have everything else. facetime.. mobile me.. Just create iMessenger and have it integrated into the normal messaging app.. Shuts the need for BBM down.

      Game over.

They could also u the names that we used to setup gamecenter as the username (pin)..

Blackberry users should be shunned and outcast, not communicated with.

You could use "What's App Messenger" and it works between iPhone & Blackberry

This is hilarious! BBM is the ONLY thing that BlackBerry owners have over iPhone owners. My friends with BB's all argue that they couldn't own an iPhone for lack of BBM - now they have literally no argument rofl. I hope this becomes a reality!

Don't get the need!! Specially if they opt to charge as most people already use a app that does this!! Think bb worried about losing customers! And yeh where is apples chat app?? Not like apple to let everyone else have all the fun lol

extremely popular BB IM yeah right, I NEVER seen anybody using it....can you say Yahoo, AOL, MSN, Novell groupwise, Lync, but BB messenger I never ever seen anybody using it, maybe .01% of all IM users. Let's face it besides email BB does not have anything else worth using. Period.

WTF is a 'Blackberry', sounds to me like a small and insignificant fruit when compared to an 'Apple'.

BBM is a fantastic way of communicating. Infact I'd say it's better than all for it's timing and reliability. If this comes at no more than 1.19 I'll buy at launch. Any more then forget it!

Wow you must not get out much to "NEVER" see anyone using BBM. I can list at least 50 people off the top of my head that have BB and use BBM all the time. That's just people I know. I would love to have BBM on my iPhone because of this.

Sure there are 3rd party apps out there that replace it, but then everyone you know that has a BB will need to install it as well. Not very likely. Something on the iPhone that can work with BBM would be awesome.
