  • Keep Native Apps on the iPhone
    Sign Our Petition

"Recently, Apple employee Greg Joswiak gave an interview with PC Magazine about the new iPod Touch and the Apple iPhone. In this interview Joswiak stated that Apple was taking a neutral stance on 3rd party native application development that has, and is currently taking place for the iPhone and now the iPod Touch.
This was great news to us all.

Unfortunately, hours after this interview was published online, Joswiak contacted PC Magazine to "update" and "clear up" Apple's position on 3rd party application development for both devices. In his follow-up Joswiak says that future software updates will most likely break native 3rd party apps.

It is for that reason that we, the iPhone and iPod Touch community, wish to present this open letter and petition to Steve Jobs and all of Apple, Inc.

We wish to simply ask that you do not break native 3rd party applications in future software/firmware updates. We are not asking for support for the 3rd party native apps, and we are not even asking for an official SDK. We are simply asking that you do not break the ability we currently have to create and run these native applications. While we are asking that you not intentionally break any of these "features"/abilities, we are also asking that you make at least some effort to ensure that none of these "features"/abilities break with upcoming updates.

We see the 3rd party iPhone/iPod Touch development community as just that, a community of your customers who are gathering together to expand on, and improve the amazing and revolutionary product(s) that you have brought us.
We also believe that our efforts only increase the "cool factor" of the iPhone and iPod Touch and only make the product(s) easier to sell. Many of us have been able to convince people we known to purchase the iPhone and/or iPod Touch by showing them the wonderful features that you have provided by default, and then sealing the deal by also showing them all the 3rd party work that is being done.

We hope our work will bring more revenue to your company, and only ask in return that you continue to let us do what we are doing and create attractive, useful, and fun applications that make the iPhone and iPod Touch without a doubt the best product(s) of their kind on the market today and with both of our work, the market to come.

Thank you for your time, and your consideration.

    Signed,

The iPhone and iPod Touch Community "

More so than just signing a petition, I think everyone here should write Apple a very well worded letter and paste it into the box at:

      http://www.apple.com/feedback

I have sent them a few letters there.

Good example of justification for not locking down the iPhone:

I'm currently studying Tocatta in D in Piano, and a lot of the rhythm is very difficult to read as written. My teacher has went through it with me over and over but I always forget it. So this time I fired up VNotes and recorded her going through it with me.

Now we all know there are ppl out there who could care less about the things that really make the iPhone awesome.. Some people might NEED that feature, and may end up getting a Blackberry or something else that has the feature they need.

By not locking the iPhone down, or even opening it up further, they insure that THERE IS NO FEATURE that the iPhone cannot potentially have.

I think e-mails with coherent reasoning speaks louder than a petition. Think the $200 rebate, the $100 credit. probably due to tons of ppl complaining.

Tons of people complained about the Wii component cables before the Wii came out. As a result Nintendo sent out an email saying they could order them through the website and receive them in time for the Wii release.

The letter is a great idea. It needs some revising. It must be stressed to Apple why it is in THEIR best interest to not intentionally break 3rd party. I know there is a comment on the cool factor and sales. This needs to be brought to the forefront. Say something to the effect of "having 3rd party applications widely available helps DRIVE sales of the iPhone to customers who would otherwise never have bought one for this limitation alone."

We do know that they won't spend 1 minute of man power to ensure compatability between their firmware and our hacks, so we need to tackle this from more of a financial standpoint IMHO. I'd also make the letter a lot shorter so that they may even actually read it in its entirety. This has got to look like a busines letter would look. The more professional it is presented, the better it will be received. I'd also stress to anyone signing they use a real name (first and last) and not some screen name, it just looks phony if you don't. Anyone can put a list of names on something and hand it to a company. IMHO again. It might have more impact if the email addresses were also provided to Apple.

I'm signing it anyway. This is no different than Apple TV or Newton hacking.

It is absolutely true that the 3rd party app developers ARE CREATING ALL THE BUZZ THERE IS RIGHT NOW for the iphone, which I'll bet is responsible for 50% or more of current sales. SO BE COOL ABOUT IT APPLE, work with these guys, you need them. How else do you think you're going to compete against a hardware juggernaut like the N95 coming around with video, gps, a real camera, etc, etc. (stuff me and most people miss every single day). How do you think MS dominated the world with their (compared to apple anyway) crappy hardware platform. Or are you going to make the same mistake again and let somebody else eat your lunch on a market you invented???
