  • End Of The Line for iPhone 3G : No iOS 4.3 Support

Taking a close look at the details released about iOS 4.3, it is understood that the iPhone 3G will no longer receive further iOS updates. Apple's website Apple - iOS 4.3 Software Update, lists the compatible devices as the 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G and 4G. This means no support for the verizon phone either.

With all the complaints about iOS 4.x on the 3G, it makes sense to see them drop the support, but it could leave many users displeased.

Any 3G owners that are not happy with this move? We want to hear from you!

I agree with mortopher. Apple were selling the iPhone 3G less than 12 months ago and they're stopping support. Not to mention that Apple already in the past dont even patch older models with security patches. What if they stopped updating last years Macbooks? Would you all be happy to "upgrade" if Apple shipped Lion only for the latest Macs?
There is no actually reason, other than trying to push people to upgrade, that iOS 4.3+ could not run smoothly on an iPhone 3G, and with many features that they've already stripped out.

It would be nice if apple would come up with a buy back plan, as an incentive to keep the spirit alive!!!

yea have the iPhone 3G... bummed out yea... understand why apple did it yea... hate iOS 4.x.x hell yea... Should have kept 3.1.3 since iPhone 3G worked perfect w/ it...

either way this Summer I'll be iPhone 5 bound and hopefully will be on someone other than AT&T or Verizon... Hope it will be on Sprint personally w/ either WiMAX or LTE support since they're going LTE sooner than later anyways from all I've read...

I noticed you and a few others on here who still have an iPhone 3G (I do too ha) are saying you wish you could go back to 3.1.3, well you can! It speeds up the device to how you remember it when new, and it's basically all the same features because ios 4 disabled multitasking and such on the 3G anyway. So I'm hoping this can help someone out like it helped me. It's so simple too. Here's how:

"1. Put iphone in dfu mode
      2. shift-restore to 3.1.3 original in itunes
      3. If you get an error: download tinyumbrella and 'kick device out of recovery'
if you dont get an error: go to step 4
      4. So now your good to go unless you want to jailbreak it" -Badd_blood.

my step 5. Jailbreak it with jailbreakme.com (right on safari, easiest method ever!) and then unlock with ultrasn0w if you've got the right BB for the job.

Firmware download: Help Me Jailbreak - Firmware files
Tinyumbrella (in case you need it, download links on side): The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella

...Also, I understand why Apple dropped 4.3 for the iPhone 3G, that thing would run like a dinosaur, it already does on 4.2.1.
...Oh and BTW not everyone can afford to upgrade every time a new iPhone comes out... I'm still very happy with my 3G and 3GS although I am a little jealous . ha but maybe i'll get the iPhone 5 next time around

I think they should have included the 3G. Really, it's the users choice if they want to upgrade and risk the slowness.

When it comes down to it, it's just to try to get 3G users to buy a new phone. I'll get a new phone when my AT&T contract is up, dammit.

its not like the 3g couldnt handle 4.3 even the older android devices like the g1 and the mytouch 3g have got ports of android 3.0. it would more than likely b slower than crap but it probably would still work.

I think it's great that 4.3 isn't going to be available for 3G. I have a 3G on ios 4.2.1 and no matter how many Daemons you delete, get rid of multitasking etc.. As long as you jailbreak the phone isn't built for it. I'm waiting on the iPhone 5! N if it takes longer than July I'll jis get a iPhone 4 I'm the meantime

I still have an iPhone 3G, I'm kinda disappointed it won't get the last 4.x firmware update, but right now I'm fine with it being on jailbroken 4.1 so I really don't care. I was planning on upgrading anyways to either an iPhone 5(4G) if it supports LTE 4G on Verizon. If not than I'm switching to Android.

Actually, on apples website, it specifically says iPhone 4 and then in parentheses (GSM only)

U missed the point: why upgrade the 3G if your not going to give them a new feature? The 3G is already sh*t slow, and can't handle multitasking; meanwhile, apple came out with a dual core iPad.

People said the same thing when the original iPhone got outdated. Would you like apple if they were still selling the original iPhone, and if it ran 4.3?

To some extent I agree with this. But try telling something like this to a computer owner. My computer becomes LITERALLY obsolete in 3 years? Sure it will become dated, but I don't lose the ability to update software. The real issue here is that Apple requires things to run buttery smoothly. This is nice from a product vision standpoint, but sucks for consumers that get screwed like this. Some people legitimately don't want to upgrade their phone every year, and they shouldn't have to! We aren't even talking about people wanting FREE updates, just updates, period. It's easy for the people who drop the cash on the new deice yearly to say things like "this should have stopped being supported a year ago already". Again with the Apple cultist wordage BS...

Funny how people enjoy multitasking on the 3G through a third party and it works just fine... Slow is the the eyes of the beholder. Certainly the newer phones are peppier. If it were up to Apple we would replace ALL of our hardware yearly (and some of the Steve Job drones here do just that!), but that shouldn't HAVE to be the case.

No, I'm an unabashed fan of capitalism. I know that's not a popular opinion these days with a socialist for president but more power to Google and MS.

And what part of 2008 don't you get? How is "last years" MacBook a comparison to an iPhone that debuted in '08? Last year wasn't '08 FYI. And if people bought a 3G last year (before June and the iP4), you did so knowing that a newer phone was out (3GS) and that a brand new phone was coming soon (unless you live under a rock).

So this is where I'm saying the consumer bears some responsibility for going the cheaper route on an older phone. I'm not blaming the consumer but as a smart spender, you have to know what you're doing. Its not Apple's obligation to warn you that that may drop support for it after 3 years. Its not their obligation to continue to support it.

How am I trolling? I've presented my views in an organized, punctuated and spaced (easy to read) form.

Sorry you took offense to me scoffing at "Apple trying to make money." Corporations aren't non-profit organizations that exist to appease consumer's every whim. Apple does a really good job of keeping their customers satisfied (see polls, repeat customers, etc). Its a shame your clinging to the notion that three year old technology should get all the perks of the latest phones. Time to be realistic "kiddo."

Your delusional. If apple wanted to please their consumers they'd backoff their "anti-jailbreak" schemes.
