  • Verizon to Drop Unlimited Data Plans for iPhone

In a move that many feared would come true sooner rather than later, Verizon Chief Financial Officer Francis Shammo suggested on Tuesday at an investors conference that Verizon will soon end unlimited data plans for its recently acquired iPhone. The demise of unlimited plans may transpire as soon as this summer.

Verizon Wireless allows unlimited Web-surfing for $30 a month for users of its version of the popular Apple phone. But this will change in the coming months.
Released just weeks ago on the Verizon network, the iPhone, Shammo says, simply had to be introduced with an unlimited data plan on the table. Why? Because Verizon "didn't want to put up a barrier" to potential iPhone buyers interested in coverage from Verizon. Shammo's comments, naturally, are being taken to mean that unlimited plans will end with the introduction of the iPhone 5, a fifth generation product that will certainly come with a CDMA version.

Following Shammo's remarks, Credit Suisse analyst Jonathan Chaplin told Reuters that "I would take that comment as a pretty strong signal there's an iPhone refresh coming to Verizon in the third quarter." Chaplin, however, says investors may be rightfully apprehensive at this point with regard to another iPhone release, especially since many customers would likely be upset that their new Verizon iPhone will be "out of date" only months after its debut. "You'd be worried there'd be a backlash from consumers. What they don't want is for Verizon to be put in a position where its forced to offer free trade-ins," Chaplin says. "There's some risk of that."

sry to be the bearer of bad news guys, im an ATT user and ive been with T-mobile since the first iphone and i honestly disagree with verizons pricing BUT this is come to no surprise. They DID announce that the unlimited data was gonna be temporary

"Are there minimum service and data pricing requirements when purchasing iPhone 4?

Yes, iPhone customers will need an unlimited data package $29.99 or higher (available for a limited time only)."

      iPhone® 4. Verizon. It Begins.

now both sides of the teams can settle down.

EDIT: If they do pull away from grandfathering customers (which i highly doubt theyd pull a move like that) then that is shady as ****.

So glad to be in the UK. My contract has unlimited data and it will remain that way unless I make any changes by switching to a different contract. All I need to do is buy my new iPhone and register it on to my existing contract.

They have already removed unlimited data from the majority of UK contracts, however once you sign up to any contract it remains the same unless you change it..

Hahahaha. If those who switched to Verizon aren't grandfathered in for unlimited data that would suck for them.
      Is this even legal?

thanks, i work at bestbuy and we had to prep up for the release >_< haha plus we're always talking to different vendor reps and thats wat he was telling me aswell

as for the legality, technically it is legal because the contract says that the data plans are subject to change at discretion, but its just bad business for them to pull something like that

You think you guys have it bad... I'm on an unlimited data plan in the UK with a 500mb fair usage policy.

Limiting data to 500mb a month and calling it unlimited is legal in UK.

Still have my AT&T unlimited plan. It took yrs not weeks like VZ to kill the unlimited plan.

Damn. I know people hate Edge on there iPhone but with all this ATT and Verizon BS I'll stick to a unlocked iPhone on wifi or Edge if I have to until one either tmobile or sprint gets tha iPhone(hopefully either companies won't pull this AT&T or verizon BS) or AT&T starts to offer unlimited plans again. Until any of those things happen I'll keep my unlocked i4 on tmobile using wifi where I get it( which in most places here) and edge if I have to.

      Im on T-Mobile.
Have been since the 2G days.
      Complete w/ slow edge service.
      On an iPhone 4.
My bill is cheap and I don't stress any of this.
Takes a little effort to maintain the device sometimes with updates.
      But well worth it.
Just want to send love to the programmers who make this alternative possible.
Greatly appreciate the option to avoid both ATT and Verizon entirely..
      Although its nothing personal.
I can't see paying so much for a phone.
And I think the iPhone 4 is one of the best devices ever created.
      Couldn't give it up.
      Atleast, I don't think so.
Deep respect for hackers and the freedom they provide.
      Gratitude.
      Adam.

Take that all you verizon iPhone ppl. And for all those who left AT&T for verizon for the same reason take that as well...

What a scam seriously. Offer unlimited plans just to get more ppl to buy a verizon iPhone then once you get a good hand full remove that feature!!
The ppl that have the unlimited plans will get to keep it until it expires in 2 yrs.

Honestly, I wouldn't get the iPhone 5 without an unlimited plan.

Sucks for you, being on ATT!!! ROFLMAO

Do you understand what that post was initially stating. It was stating that unlimited plans will /no longer/ be available. Meaning that the existing users who already chose it beforehand keep their plan, but new users will be excempt from it.

How would it suck for me for being on an unlimited grandfathered AT&T plan which I of corse do not pay for. My job pays for my iPhone 4 bill and has been since the first iPhone.

So I ask again how does this suck for me?

Why is there always a battle between Iphone users on AT&T and Verizon now? I just don't get it. I'm sure most people left AT&T because of coverage and issues getting a signal in their area. Verizon may have been the best option for them if they really wanted the iphone. So now Verizon pulls the plug on the Unlimited Data and here we go again with the Ha Ha i have AT&T crap. Just stupid. Any way you look at it..AT&T..Verizon..we all get screwed in some way....

They would have to grandfather in the unlimited data because it would be a significant change of contract by them and allow people to break their contracts.

The iPhone isn't doing nearly as well on verizon as all the people thought. What happened to the supposed 1/3 of AT&T users that were supposed to switch? Verizon won't even release sales #'s on the iPhone!!

Forget unlimited data on AT&T and verizon for the most part. Data is the most costly part of wireless service now. I suspect voice plans will get better to compensate.

      1) With Verizon I actually get service
      2) Verizon's is faster
      3) ATT doesn't have unlimited anymore, so when yours runs out, it's done.
      4) Everyones job pays for their i4, where else would you get the money?

      1) service depends on location.
My coworker just got the iPhone 4 with verizon and he hardly has singal inside are building and I always do. So that depends on location. And I for one never had an issue with with signal.

      2) we also tested out the speed and yeah verizon is about 2.3 seconds faster then AT&T.

      3) I have unlimited data.
As for everyone else well that's an issue for them. But verizon well soon be the same. Sooner then we all expected.

      4) everyone who works gets a check and pays there bills from there. My phone bill gets payed outta my bosses pocket not mine.
