  • Verizon to Drop Unlimited Data Plans for iPhone

In a move that many feared would come true sooner rather than later, Verizon Chief Financial Officer Francis Shammo suggested on Tuesday at an investors conference that Verizon will soon end unlimited data plans for its recently acquired iPhone. The demise of unlimited plans may transpire as soon as this summer.

Verizon Wireless allows unlimited Web-surfing for $30 a month for users of its version of the popular Apple phone. But this will change in the coming months.
Released just weeks ago on the Verizon network, the iPhone, Shammo says, simply had to be introduced with an unlimited data plan on the table. Why? Because Verizon "didn't want to put up a barrier" to potential iPhone buyers interested in coverage from Verizon. Shammo's comments, naturally, are being taken to mean that unlimited plans will end with the introduction of the iPhone 5, a fifth generation product that will certainly come with a CDMA version.

Following Shammo's remarks, Credit Suisse analyst Jonathan Chaplin told Reuters that "I would take that comment as a pretty strong signal there's an iPhone refresh coming to Verizon in the third quarter." Chaplin, however, says investors may be rightfully apprehensive at this point with regard to another iPhone release, especially since many customers would likely be upset that their new Verizon iPhone will be "out of date" only months after its debut. "You'd be worried there'd be a backlash from consumers. What they don't want is for Verizon to be put in a position where its forced to offer free trade-ins," Chaplin says. "There's some risk of that."

off topic a bit...there is a way to get unlimited data with at&t even if you never had a unlimited plan before. All you need is a at&t sim card (mine was activated already) and an iphone 2g, activate with itunes, switch back sim card to iphone 3GS bam...Unlimited grandfathered in!

      See photo below.

I have heard of this but never tried. I heard from some people that AT&T catches it and changes it back. Is that true?

So if you can get your foot in the door quick the second time around, it isn't so much "yay unlimited for me forever and none for you!" but moreso "thank goodness I had this second opportunity."
I completely understand you point of view, and am in fact happy for you as im not here to argue but simply raise a point of thought.

However since you finally have your goal, you (and others in your position) just enjoy it quietly in the corner instead of actively trying to leave the second opportunity door open for everyone else. Thus, the company only feels pressure from the non-user side of the spectrum and the whole country ends up being scammed.

So, basically, no benefits to be on Verizon or Att concerning iPhone 4.
just a choice? Better than nothing lol unlimited data is the most important option for iPhone 4 ownership IMHO

I have heard this too...but i just did this about a month ago...and i know people have done it since FEB 24th. So this hack still works...I am yet to have any problems with at&t. I did have unlimited before i canceled my account to go on deployment to Iraq. When i was over there thats when they started the 2GB capped data. So i had unlimited before just not on this account. And from my pic above you can see i did not even use data on the 2g unlimited plan...just swapped it out and back into my 3gs and i now have unlimited!

They should just be pissed that Verizon is pulling an at&t trap with the data plans. Greedy pricks!

Oh no I respect your opinion. I understand what you're trying to say by all means and I agree.

I just think if you need something, some sacrifices have to be made. I made my sacrifice. Instead of paying $500 this year for my capped data (which I still try to minimize and cannot tether without worrying) I spend $500 to terminate and have unlimited, do as I wish as much as I want with data.

Of course, not everybody has the financial ability to do this on the spot, but canceling with AT&T now if you're going over your data paying $10 per gig (I use like 4 gigs so I'm paying $20 more a month plus $10 on the other line who uses 3 gigs) would benefit.

It's all about your ability to get your foot in the door and thinking ahead which is finianciallt better. Pay the same price at AT&T a year for capped data or unlimited but throwing in the termination fee. I worked hard to reward myself with an iPhone as I don't often buy luxuries for myself, so I would like to use it to its fullest benefit (uncapped data).

My friend called me today, he was informed by a associate at his Verizon store, that there may not be a grandfathered in clause. That it could be taken away if the company decides to do so.

Its because of all that data being chewed up as they listen to Pandora, while talking on the phone, and surfing the net. Oh wait...

After learning all the ways customers are gouged for money with their cell plans, I'm seriously deciding whether or not to even have a cell phone.

Wouldn't that be weird? I've had a cell phone in my pocket for about 11 years now - i wonder what life would be like without it. Cheaper, I know that.

That's an interesting point. What a good idea, buy a cheap phone and cheap plan, and just learn to live without the fancy gadgets and data plans. Like you said, wonder what it'd be like without.

I think, but 200mb for $15 could be gobbled up during two 6hr workdays with push notifications and every 15 min set for email retrieval. 2GB could get u thru a month depending how long u work or wifi nearby. Unlimited data is required IMHO
      Why all the data restrictions?
