  • dTunes - like iTunes, but free!

dTunes, a new app by Richard Shearman, lets you grab all the free music you'd like, downloaded straight to your iPhone using some magic to combine SeeQPod's streaming .mp3 service and Jonathan Misurda's useful Safari Download Plugin.

Download dTunes (available via Cydia now on the MMi repo), and once installed, tap the magnifying glass or the Search Seeqpod button. dTunes will bring up a window with Seeqpod in it - simply search for the music you'd like, and when found, tap the song.

dTunes will bring up a download screen, and pull the .mp3 from Seeqpod's source to your iPhone. Then head back to the main screen of dTunes, and simply tap the song you'd like to hear to play it! dTunes includes a media player directly in it, so you don't have to switch applications, etc - its an all in one solution.

And yes, it even works via 3G and EDGE. Great for when you're out and about, and hear a song you remember you want to grab at home (which I do all the time) - now you can just open dTunes and get it for free.

Please also check out the dev's site, and send him a donation if ya like what he's done.

This is the simplest way I can think of.
Download this, connect your iphone to your computer via usb, open the downloaded program, navigate to
      Code:
      /var/mobile/library/downloads
you'll find your files there. All you need to do after that is drag them onto your desktop.

now thats a reason to jailbreak my phone, thanks!

Jailbreaking is not illegal in any way.

      with that said...

I guess this means piracy is okay again?

      Piracy ftw!

      I wear an eye patch.

Not at all. I wouldn't even know how to go about that.

      Not for me.

      I have even refreshed.

I am using 1.1.4 if that matters, though I didn't see anything about this being for 2.0+

This will somehow be shut down within a few years. Mobile downloading will be considered a crime after a while. Good app though.

I've downloaded it twice already and it still hasn't shown up on my phone. Is anyone having the same issues as me?

Just use mxtube for video downloads, it works just as good if not better. Just look in Cydia under featured apps.

All the music you can eat for free? Smells like lawsuits to me. Amazing how companies find new ways to make piracy seem ok. How has seeqpod not been sued into oblivion yet?

seeqpod hasn't been sued (edit: it has, time warner, technically seeqpod isn't in the wrong.) because it's a search engine, and that's it. None of the content is ever hosted on their servers. Nice little legal conundrum for big record companies.
What they'd have to do is hunt down all those blogs hosting all those individual mp3's, and shut those down. Personally, I don't see that being feasible for them.

Its a great app, syncing would be cool. But hey we cant be picky, also I read somewhere apple has increased security or something on the library so i'm not sure how easy it would be. Oh if you cant see it in changes, search for it. Thats what happened to me, didnt show up but when I searched for it, it did. Happened with other stuff as well.

      Hey guys,

I'm the author. Nice to see all the feedback on the app.

As ringman mentioned this app was basically put together over the course of a day so I know it doesn't have many features. It was really just a concept to suit the requirements ringman posted in a forum post.

If there is enough response then I might make a few changes.

To be honest I wasn't at all sure of the legalities of the app. I guess if it comes down to it then i'll remove the access to seeqpod and just leave the music player with the ability for users to select a folder to play mp3 files. I don't think this would cause too many problems if I can keep the music playing after returning to the homepage.

I have only just posted that it's available on my website and it already has over 15,000 downloads.

Thanks again to Kyle and MMI for hosting.

Just like always the safari download plugin keeps you from watching videos in safari, even when you click play in media player it just sits there with sound and no picture.

I would love to see you integrate this program with Shazam!
can you imagine! you hear a song that you love, press shazam and identify, then in shazam have the option to get it from seeqpod and download it
      yes guy....
