  • iPad 2 Available Next Week: Rumor

Following a report that iPad 2 production was backlogged, pushing the ship date of the refreshed tablet into the summer, we're now hearing indications that they'll be in stores as early as next week. AppleInsider is quoting the well-known "people familiar with the matter" as saying that at least some iPad 2s "will be in transit to retail outlets" during next Wednesday's announcement.

Last week, Taiwanese research firm Yuanta said that there had been production problems with the second-generation iPad that would delay the release by as much as two months. Though most analysts thought these reports were overblown, both Apple and iPad manufacturer Foxconn saw their stock prices plummet. Twin reports on Friday, however, indicated that Yuanta was not just wrong, they were very wrong.

A Jon Paczkowski post on the Wall Street Journal's Digital Daily blog quotes Barclays analyst Kirk Yang as saying that iPad 2 shipments would start in early April. Delays past the original estimate of March are due to "production line setup and training," not any production problem, Yang said. But AppleInsider, which true to its name has multiple sources inside the company, says that Apple is greasing the skids for a major product rollout in the second half of next week. According to AppleInsider's insiders, they are "preparing several of its operating segments to perform functions during the second half of next week that are representative of nothing short of a large scale, consumer-oriented product roll out (not just an announcement)." Though this is clearly just hearsay, AppleInsider notes that these sources have "consistently provided accurate information" about Apple's plans and timing.

The bottom line is that it would make no sense for Apple to announce a new tablet - at the same time Motorola 's working on building up buzz for the Xoom - that it couldn't deliver for a month or more. In an increasingly competitive environment, Apple can't afford to wait. So while we don't know if the report is true, it would be the right move for Apple, and their choice of Wednesday for the announcement more likely than not reflects their confidence that they can get iPads on the street quickly.

Maybe underfeatured was the wrong word, android lacks the refinedness that iOS has. Definitely not a fanboy, I'll try out each product and buy depending on which I like more. Currently I'm debating between the motorola atrix 4g and the iPhone 5, when I'm available for upgrade.
      Motorola Xoom 32GB Wifi = $600
      Apple iPad 32GB Wifi = $600

      Motorola Xoom 32GB Wifi + 3G/4G = $800
      Apple iPad 32GB Wifi + 3G = $730

You can make the Xoom 64GB buy adding a $30-$40 32GB SD card whereas adding 32GB to an iPad costs $100
I have yet to try Honeycomb, have you?, it's supposed to be built especially for Tablets so I'd expect it to be quite refined

You're an idiot! The 32gig iPad 3G costs $729. The Motorola Xoom 3G (4g soon) is $799 and comes with 2 camera's, HDMI, USB, SD slot, Adobe Flash (in 2 weeks) and much more. I think all of those extra options are worth a lot more than just $70. So anybody with half a brain can see that the Xoom is NOT overpriced and definitely NOT under featured! Only an Apple Fanboy would make an idiotic statement like that.

No iPod or iPhone has ever said anything besides "iPod" or "iPhone" on the back why do all these fake images always have "iPad 2" or "iPhone 5" on the backs

It would be nice if they brought support for AWS on T-Mobile. If they don't I'll hold off for the LG G-Slate on T-Mobile.

I usually do not post here on the site, mainly lurking in the shadows. But, you sir are making the idiotic statement here. Just because it has added features does not automatically make it a better model. What about applications? There are only 12 (TWELVE) applications in the Android Marketplace designed for Honeycomb 3.0 (Tablets). So, out of the box, you can download 12 apps. That's it. You can download Android apps designed for phones, but nothing near the amount of iOS apps for the iPad. And please sir, do not call me an iOS fanboy. I actually have a Droid Incredible (that's an Android phone if you didn't know), which I picked over an iPhone due to it having better specs. I will agree that I honestly love iOS as much as Android, but your argument is irrelative.

They never do pre-orders on product refreshes. They ALWAYS do preorders on brand new products... ie. iPhone 3G, 3GS, i4, iPad, Macbook Air.

Think of it this way... if it has the same name as it did before then it's just a refresh. ie. Macbook Pro, Macbook, iMac, iPod Classic. It's when they hold an entire press event to unveil something new that they give people several weeks to pre-order.

Overpriced, yes a bit but under featured? No.

Only apps limit Android but Android Honeycomb owns iPad OS soo much, it looks nicer and does more than a stock iPad OS.

iPad OS is just a blown up iPod OS, same UI, same square icons, same notifications etc.

Can you put widgets on iPad?
      Can use animated wallpapers?
Does iPad/iOS have a decent notification OS?
Can you send and receive files via Bluetooth?

To call Android Honeycomb under featured is false. Apps will come fast over the next year or so

But look at the price of the iPad and its hardware specs and its OS, for the price you pay for it which is basically the screen and recycled iPhone OS technology, Apple should at least give you a high res LCD or an OLED screen.

Did the name calling make you feel better about yourself...? Seriously, the name calling is pathetic, what are we 12 yrs old? Just because he was off on his comment doesn't mean you have to put him down!

I'll keep this as a rumor til we have some real evidence

It would probably require special coding in the apps, but if they really have a dual-core processor in the iPad 2 then it wouldn't be impossible.

Actually the wifi-only Motorola Xoom is supposed to be $600 also.
Why would u need this though? First your arguing about screen estate and then you want to run two apps at the same time? That's what a computer is for......

Anyway back to your point, there is different apps in the app store that allow this. Like have a web page open and a notepad open on the same page.

Personally I like the iPad, and I hate when people say it's just like an oversized iPod yet they don't even own one. It is definitely not that, I'm a college student so portability is important. When at home, I use my 17" MBP and for school I just grab the iPad if ever I need something on my home computer, I open up Teleport and VNC my home computer and email it to myself and open it up on iWork for iPad. In my case the iPad is useful and I don't care how it looks. It's better nice and simple than crowded and complicated.

And you are illiterate, blind or maybe just didn't read where I said that underfeatured was the wrong word and that it's the fact that android isn't as refined as iOS. Have I tried out the xoom, yes I did at my local best buy and it was choppy. Go to phandroid.com the first comment regarding the xoom is that the off contract price should be 600 instead of 800. So it's overpriced. You can buy an hdmi adapter for the ipad. Expandable memory is nice, but few people are going to need more than 32gb. I haven't encountered a problem where I need to have flash player, and should the occasion arise I have a laptop that's more than capable. I have a good deeply that the ipad 2 will have 2 cameras. Now since you so fiercely stood up for the xoom go out and buy one.

Also my earlier post, like most on the news section, is my own opinion. I'll be sure to add "in my opinion" from here on out just so you don't get your panties in a bunch again.

You're absolutely right regarding the iPhone 4, but of course the jailbreak is not courtesy of Apple - at best it's an indirect result of Apple's large userbase combined with a high level of hardware and software integration.

As far as the iPad UI, I would really have no idea where to start - but something like an ever-present dock, or an expandable status bar with options (rather akin to Honeycomb I know, but more because it's simply a good idea than any desire to copycat) would be decent startig points.

And as far as the home screen goes, what else is there to do but icons and widgets? I really feel like designers must be missing a trick here. It feels as if everyone is still in the dark when it comes to the whole tablet form factor - like there is some radical new UI design just around the corner, and once we see it we'll wonder why nobody thought of it before. But right now, nobody knows what it is because it hasn't been done yet. I'll readily agree that Apple already provided the same paradigm shift with the iPhone UI, but they certainly did not do so with the iPad.

Actually, I'm certainly not the first to say this, but the Windows Phone 7 'live tile' concept could actually be a real hit on a tablet, especially the idea of 'hubs' merging similar apps into one tile with pertinent information from each displayed. Just a shame Microsoft don't want to realise this and keep pushing the desktop version of Windows 7 which simply doesn't work well on tablets.

On the whole I think that tablets are still a solution looking for a problem. Until they find their real purpose they will not truly emerge from their chrysalis.

      IMO

First off, I wasn't the one arguing about screen estate, and secondly I just was saying it would be cool. I think it would be cool to stream a movie or something while checking email or looking at something in Safari or chatting with a friend.. or any other combination of apps.

And as far as that being "what a computer is for", I want to be able to keep from using my PC as much as possible and use a tablet instead.

An OS can not own another OS unless it fixes its own problems. Honeycomb was choppy, many reviews have said so themselves.

Widgets? Whats the point? Just go to the app and you get everything.

Animated Wallpapers? I didnt see that on Honeycomb but seriously do you really need it? All it is is a battery killer.

Notification System? This isnt a phone, your not getting calls or txts, so you wont be getting much notifications. Mail comes as mail and there are indicators next to it.

Bluetooth Transfer? There are apps for that.

Under featured? Yes, it only has 12 apps. They dont have more at launch whats the point?

Also at the verizon store both of the tablets were next to each other, the iPad's display still looked better.

under featured? The XOOM is gonna get 4g, has a mini sd slot, tegra 2 processor, front and back cameras plus a 1280x800 res screen plus HD recording, multitouch and a 10.1 inch screen.
      So seriously WTF? "under featured"?
