  • HowTo: Jailbreak iDevices Untethered (and preserve iPhone Baseband) with PwnageTool 4.2

Step 1: Download PwnageTool 4.2 here. Also Download the appropriate 4.2.1 firmware bundle (available from Apple). For the walkthrough I used an AT&T iPhone 4.

Step 2: Open PwnageTool and click 'Expert Mode' at the top, then click the device you'd like to jailbreak.

Step 3: Click "Browse for IPSW and browse for the firmware bundle you downloaded (should be firmware 4.2.1)

Step 4: Click 'General' and select functions as needed.
    • 'Activate the phone' - Hacktivates the phone if previously unlocked
    • 'Enable baseband update' - Performs the baseband update (DO NOT CHECK THIS IF YOU RELY ON A ULTRASNOW UNLOCK)
    • There are options to re-enable functionality, which are specifically for the iPhone 3G. If you need them, check them off.

Step 5: Click the arrow to apply the changes.

Step 6: Install custom packages and cydia sources as needed, then click build to save your custom IPSW file, you may be asked to enter your Mac OS user password.

Step 7: When prompted, connect your device via USB and follow the instructions for entering DFU mode.

Step 8: Open iTunes. iTunes will tell you it has detected a device in recovery mode. IMPORTANT: PRESS OPTION AND CLICK RESTORE. Do not simply press restore, this will upgrade your device to stock 4.2.1, and WILL upgrade your baseband (which is irreversible). A dialog box will open and allow you to choose the firmware bundle to restore with. Choose the custom created bundle.

Step 9: Wait for the restore to complete, and enjoy your untethered jailbreak! Unlockers on an unlockable baseband can simply install ultrasn0w and unlock. Enjoy!

The "OPTION" would be the "alt-option" key on your keyboard. click restore while holding the key.

Isn't it true that most people jailbroke with Greenpois0n instead of this? Are there that many people who waited specifically for this, especially with iOS 4.3 being released any day now? Is this specifically geared towards people on T-Mobile (in the U.S.) who need a working unlock to be able to do anything on an iPhone at all?

      Thanks...

My 3G is the same way, no ATT network. All calls fail. Damn. I need this phone to work. Does anybody on the Dev or otherwise have any advice?

      Thanks!

There probably is no unlock. It would take all of 15 minutes to shoot a quick video and post it on YouTube showing the baseband version and dialing customer service on T-Mobile, like Mr. Hotz did back in the day. This would reveal absolutely nothing about the exploit to Apple.

I mean yeah, I get that the Dev Team does this for free and they did accomplish some amazing things in the past - but they should at least own up to their limitations so people can decide what to do with their locked iPhone 4s. (Like sell it and buy an Evo on Boost, lol)

Seems to me you have wifisync installed. It interferes with the JB process. You need to uninstall it first from both your Mac and idevice(s) before starting the JB.

You can reinstall wifisync after the JB.

How did it get to that stage of not booting? It must at least ask you to connect to iTunes.

actually I found how to uninstall the wifisync on my mac. I didn't know I had to remove it prior to the jb. It boots but it doesn't go to the home screen and just hangs at about 98% at the end as described above. I'm in the process of redoing it again now. hopefully that was it.

EDIT: that was it!!! it's now past that restore bar and the apple has appeared again and I think it's restoring now. waiting for it to finish THANKS!!!!

      I have iPhone
      4 4.0 1.59.0
firmware that I unlocked.. Does that mean I can upgrade to 4.2.1 without losing my unlock ? And preserving the same baseband ?

I reset network settings, removed SIM card, rebooted, but no luck. Now it says "No Signal". Any idea how to fix?

For those having the "No Signal" you need to go into Pwnage tool advanced and uncheck "activate". This will be checked automatically so you need to remove it cause if you dont but your carrier is AT&T, you wont get service.

Redo it with this unchecked and it should work fine
