  • Apple Testing Slide-Out iPhone 5? Really?

A Taiwanese website that has a had a decent track record of verified iPhone leaks is claiming today that Apple is evaluating 3 different hardware prototypes of the iPhone 5, one of them including a slide-out keyboard. The Google translation of the report on tw.Apple.pro is pretty hard to understand, but seems to indicate that in addition to the slide-out model, there will also be an updated "traditional" iPhone with minor under-the-hood improvements compared to the iPhone 4.

It's not clear from the googletrans what the phrase "sliding cover" refers to, but it may suggest a physical keyboard that slides out from the case. In addition to this model, Apple is supposedly testing an iPhone 5 that is styled like the iPhone 4 but with a longer-lasting battery and a better camera. Like the upgrade from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS, then, it would be an evolution rather than a redesign, which is in line with recent reports. There is no description at all of the third prototype, though this might refer to the "iPhone mini" that has generated so much buzz of late.

There are - obviously - a lot of things to question in this report. The iPhone's touchscreen is perhaps its most fundamental element, and so the idea of a slide-out keyboard pretty much flies in the face of Apple's whole design aesthetic. Steve Jobs explained back in 2007 why Apple decided not to put a keyboard on the iPhone, saying that once you do "it's there forever and [it's] hard to change the buttons to work with different applications." However, for some users learning to type on a touchscreen is a significant barrier, so it may be that Apple has decided to include this as sort of "training wheels" for those customers.

The report would be laughable if Apple.pro hadn't got it right on numerous occasions. In 2008, they showed off the unibody MacBook before it was released, and in July of last year revealed the small touchscreen which would eventually turn up in the new multitouch iPod nano months later. Last year, they previewed the white iPhone 4 bezel before the phone was even announced, and showed off an iPhone 4 battery in June. So this is not necessarily something you can laugh off... yet.

I personally think this would be a good option, for ipod touch. Ik everyone else thinks this is horrible idea, but i think it would be pretty cool for the ipod touch. just my 2 cents though

      weee, lol.
I converted from iPhone 2G to HTC Desire Z exactly FOR the physical KB.
When you type a few words - sentence, display is ok, but if and when you type a lot, and you need to be freaky fast with no possibility to plug-in KB adapter, this thing rocks hard, like the Duke Nukem steel balls.
So i for one would love to see iPhone with physical KB and i have no doubt, that if apple would do it, this will be worth the while and surely wont be so ugly as the photoshop on the front page.

A slide out keyboard is only speculation by the writer of the article. It's never been stated specifically. It could be (and probably will be) something less predictable.

Well couldn't they make it removable so everyone wins?

      This is sacrilege!
But I can see apple doing this to expand their market.
They will release an iPhone nano for the masses, then release an all business steroid pumped iPhone for all of us, and finally they will release the iPhone with a keyboard for people who are making the transition from a traditional phone to am iPhone, to me this makes perfect sense. I still feel this is an utterly stupid idea.

Sign me up for a standard true to it's roots iPhone !

      Not going to happen.
Jobs himself hates the idea. He said it on 2008 keynote.

Funny thing is iOS keyboard hasn't changed at all...
He also said that Apple would never release a netbook, but they did.

Ugly or not, its not an official image. Don't know why anyone would see it like it is.

I've been using the iPhone since the first one was released. I love the iPhone, but the only time I would ever think about changing my phone is so I can have a phone with a QWERTY keyboard. Gone are the days of having the joy of playing with a new phone every other year.

I kind of miss a physical keyboard. Back on Verizon days all the phones I ever used had a physical qwerty keyboard. I wouldn't mind it if it isn't too bulky or ugly. If I do get it and hate it, I'll probably figure it out in the first week and return it for the iPhone 4 again until another iPhone next year is released.

Really? Why is that? I ask bc I haven't noticed a difference, I have always made iPhone spelling errors and irritating inability to hit the right keys all the time since the beginning of my iPhone experience on 2.0 lol.
