  • Rampant Rumors of iPhone 'Nano' Appear

The internet was buzzing the entire weekend it seemed with waves of information regarding rumors of a smaller iPhone that Apple has in the works. The product has been confirmed by some pretty big sources, including the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg.

There's been a substantial amount of information about this phone bouncing around the web, so we've taken the time to round-up as much of the info and put it in one place for you.

    Design and Cost:
The iPhone 'nano' (that's what I'll call it for now) would have a smaller form factor, smaller than current iPhones, and could cost as little as $200, off-contract. That could easily translate to an on-contract price of around $50. That's significantly less than current iPhones that can retail for well over $600 off-contract. The phone may even ditch the home button and feature an edge-to-edge screen Maybe that's when we'll see those nifty multi-touch gestures from the iOS 4.3 Beta (originally for iPad, but ported to iPhone). It's been also rumored that the phone would not utilize a retina display in order to keep costs down.

The phone could utilize much less on-board storage (the most expensive part of the iPhone is its storage) than the current iPhone. Rumors like this rely on yet another set of rumors of a MobileMe revamp (which we've seen hints of) that could accompany a release of a product like this, that would allow users to access their Media wirelessly with cloud storage. We'd assume, just as 9to5 Mac does, that the phone will feature at least some on-board storage to handle the core OS and allow users to install apps. Because what good is an iPhone without apps to go with it?

    New Feautures:
Not much in this category yet, other than the previously mentioned edge-to-edge screen, but it's also rumored the iPhone nano will have voice-based navigation built-in, something only currently possible through a 3rd-party app or via Jailbreak. It's also possible that the cloud based media could allow for Apple to roll out a long-rumored music streaming service, requiring even less physical memory onboard.

All signs point to a summer release for this iPhone. The phone is expected to be a mid-range price point. Many are speculating that the release of this phone could accompany the release of the iPhone 5.

Some things we haven't heard anything about include any mention of what carriers will offer this phone, although I would speculate Verizon and AT&T would both get it. And of course, Apple isn't confirming anything. As usual, we'll wait and see. We'll keep you all updated if more information comes in regarding the new iPhone.

Honestly I'd rather see them with T-Mobile then with being with prepaid plans. Lol

Highly likely as well, I look for an iPhone nano to have a larger reach carrier wise... Verizon and AT&T will do well keeping with the larger versions, you will probably see iPhone 5 there and possibly added to Sprint or T-Mobile, and the nano version with a wide spread release to a large number of carriers who usually consist of a different demographic.

Don't see why people have the need to bash Apple? The new iPhone nano would be what the MBA is to the MB and MBP, just like how the iPod shuffle was to the iPod nano and iPod Video. It appeals to ALOT more people that could not afford/want to spend so much money on the phone. Great marketing decision on Apples part if they go through with this.

PS Most of ya'll will bash it just like the iPhone 4 prototype and iPad, but look at its success now.

When Apple first started they were trying to make there screens bigger and computer cpu's faster, why are we going in the complete opposite direction now?

A 3gs processor doesn't use less power. Please get your facts correct before you argue them.

I bash it because I hate to think of having the close to same phone as every little girl and boy in the world. Plus, it would be uncharacteristic of apple.

Wasn't uncharacteristic when you had as close to same iPod, same with as close to the same Mac... Why not a phone too?

Because the price point isn't right. For apple anyway. They were all far more expensive than the other "comparable" mp3 players.

Yeah, they make many different types and sizes of iPods and Macs, so why not more iPhone models? I wouldn't want a smaller one personally, but maybe a slightly larger one would be nice.

Maybe apple can make 37 different phones all using iOS just to be cool like android. Blah blah blah.

I'm all for a cheaper price point phone (so I can get the wife one). But I'm even more for a family iPhone data plan........ At ummm $40 per month

And on another note, I have 0 interest in anything bigger than the current i4. Those droids are hideous, it's like slapping a old school zack Morris phone to your head.... But it's flat.

Im thinkn the iphone nano is a gud move since it should b sold without a contract, sounds like t-mobile should finally b gittn theres. and as far as the iphone 5... im thinkn a 4g iphone4 probably for sprint. Since apple is finish with their exclusive deal, im expectn them to go nuts and go to every carrier like jus like tha Blackberry
