  • Apple Working on Smaller, Cheaper iPhone to Compete with Android

Apple is said to be working on a new smaller, less expensive version of the iPhone, according to a new report from Bloomberg today. This new model would be in the $200 range and be about a third smaller than the current iPhone 4. With a lower price point, cellular providers could then give customers the choice of either paying for the phone at full price without a contract or give the phone away for free with a two-year contract.

Currently, Apple has 16 percent of the global mobile market share, while rival Googleís market share has more than tripled to 32.9 percent in the fourth quarter. With a new low-cost iPhone, Apple hopes to increase its overall market share worldwide and surpass Google in the process.

Apple is said to be developing an iPhone that can access multiple wireless networks. This dual-mode iPhone would be compatible with both GSM and CDMA wireless standards and be able to work internationally as well.

It is also widely believed that Apple is developing a universal SIM card that would give users the option of choosing cellular networks with an app installed the phone. This technology would allow users to switch networks without having to change SIM cards manually. Itís thought that Apple hopes to cut costs associated with the distribution and management of SIM cards worldwide.

This new mini iPhone is by no means a sure thing, however, as Apple has a history of developing prototype devices then scrapping them along the way. The prototype is also said to be missing the home button according to reports.

CEO Steve Jobs may be on sick leave at the moment, but that hasnít stopped him from making strategic decisions while heís away. Heís said to be working from home, but he has been seen on the Apple campus now and again. Itís a safe bet that heís keeping a close eye on the latest iPad and iPhone versions due later this year. COO Tim Cook has been handling the day-to-day operations while Steve is away. This may actually give Steve more time to oversee the development of the next couple of iOS devices and iron out any wrinkles before they are released. Hopefully, heís getting some rest and not working too hard while heís recuperating though.

Many good points! I think that making a smaller iPhone would actually work out, probably not near as well as the iPhone 4, but well enough to warrant trying it in a much smaller production amount. Over the years Ive heard many people say things to the affect of not liking the iPhone based on its size. Also, look at the latest iPod nano; It has a drastically watered down OS and very limited functionality, but is smaller and overall, handles very much like the other current iOS devices. My money says it will be about the same size as the more recent 120gig ipod, weigh a little less and will probably lose some of the major features that they push with the iPhone 4(Front facing camera for facetime, noise canceling secondary mic, and probably "Retina" display).

sounds about right, would be all its good for, i mean you would not want to do some of the things you could do on the normal iphone because of the lack of screen real-estate.

I really hope Apple doesn't go through with this. I've prided Apple on not releasing dozens of phones each year to compete. They stay at the top of the market but just putting a phone out each year and they can keep doing that. So please Apple, no new, smaller iPhone.

now i can see this not working. how much smaller can an iphone really get....and be hard to use...especially a touch keyboard.
I wish they would make it bigger. Bigger screen, bigger battery, and my big fingers would be happier.

I believe that Apples decision of coming up with the mini Iphone at more economical cost is a Good decision to increase its Market share. If the Iphone is with all the same features as the existing Iphone 4 does have then it will definitely a success.

I doubt it I'm guessing theyre making a free lance iPhone which I think is quite smart because everyone would buy one. all apple would have to do is produce one phone unlike android who produces multiple phones for multiple services. i wonder if they make money for being on a selected service and get a percentage of the bills for having an iPhone on the service

OMG, the current phone is already small enough, still want to make it smaller? Holy crap...Apple must be on crack.

It seems counterintuitive to assume they would for some odd reason be looking to reduce the screens size to make the phone smaller. It's much more likely they are attempting to reduce the areas that surround the screen.
