  • Apple Working on Smaller, Cheaper iPhone to Compete with Android

Apple is said to be working on a new smaller, less expensive version of the iPhone, according to a new report from Bloomberg today. This new model would be in the $200 range and be about a third smaller than the current iPhone 4. With a lower price point, cellular providers could then give customers the choice of either paying for the phone at full price without a contract or give the phone away for free with a two-year contract.

Currently, Apple has 16 percent of the global mobile market share, while rival Googleís market share has more than tripled to 32.9 percent in the fourth quarter. With a new low-cost iPhone, Apple hopes to increase its overall market share worldwide and surpass Google in the process.

Apple is said to be developing an iPhone that can access multiple wireless networks. This dual-mode iPhone would be compatible with both GSM and CDMA wireless standards and be able to work internationally as well.

It is also widely believed that Apple is developing a universal SIM card that would give users the option of choosing cellular networks with an app installed the phone. This technology would allow users to switch networks without having to change SIM cards manually. Itís thought that Apple hopes to cut costs associated with the distribution and management of SIM cards worldwide.

This new mini iPhone is by no means a sure thing, however, as Apple has a history of developing prototype devices then scrapping them along the way. The prototype is also said to be missing the home button according to reports.

CEO Steve Jobs may be on sick leave at the moment, but that hasnít stopped him from making strategic decisions while heís away. Heís said to be working from home, but he has been seen on the Apple campus now and again. Itís a safe bet that heís keeping a close eye on the latest iPad and iPhone versions due later this year. COO Tim Cook has been handling the day-to-day operations while Steve is away. This may actually give Steve more time to oversee the development of the next couple of iOS devices and iron out any wrinkles before they are released. Hopefully, heís getting some rest and not working too hard while heís recuperating though.

You'd take some random website's information over the company who actually sells the phone?

You forgot about 140 carriers in about 100 countries in your list

The iPhone is sold on pretty much every carrier in the world, I've proven that to you, with actual reputable facts and if you can't see that then you're simply stupid, no other way to say it.
(btw, "pretty much does not mean every single carrier. Just like Android is not on every carrier in the world either.)

Ah no, if Steve jobs said 7" screen size was too small for the tablet experience then what experience would a 3" screen iPhone provide?

If Apple made their iOS open source, could you imagine how much their market share would increase?

I'd buy an iPhone mini in an instant. Who wants to walk around with a brick in their pocket? Some of the Android devices my friends have are stupidly large; makes me wonder if they're trying to compensate for some other inadequacies... ;-) I get that some people like larger screens, but where does that end - will we all end up carrying 60" plasma-screen TVs?

I hope Apple goes ahead with this and gives users the choice.

Nah an smaller iphone wont work. I was going to buy the verizon iphone on the 25 of so. But now that they found out it has a chip that can handle gsm and cdma. Im waiting. I live 8 months in the USA and 4 in Guatemala. I need GSM in Guatemala. So im waiting and still people remember we are talking about the 5 Iphone. I believe its going to be a crazy upgrade. Its the 5 year since iphone came out. so apple can do anything crazy to celebrate the anniversary if im correct. So im waiting, im just thankful they found that out. I would of been sad when im in Guatemala and couldnt use my Iphone.
Still june aint that far. I can start the summer vacation with an Iphone 5!!! Oh yeah!!

I had a question? Where can i find what is my green apple going to change to. Like now it is Green Apple. Where can i find whats going to be next. How many post to get to the next, etc.

I know it is off topic.

I don't want a smaller iphone. I want it to stay like it is. The size is just right. Not to big or to small. Androids your right. They way big haha When i look at one im like man i feel sorry for that person. They have to carry a phone that is the size of my psp just to make calls.

I hope Apple are still not going on about removing the sim, its a crap idea it gives them full control, Europeans are used to swapping sims everytime they cross a border to get cheaper rates

They won't be able to do this with Apple in control, can't see me plugging my iPhone into iTunes as I drive from Holland, through Belgium and into France

Can't see the carriers being happy about this either

I don't think their objective is to make a smaller iphone. The goal is to make a more affordable one. To meet the more affordable objective they go smaller.

This is all about world domination ish! These phones would be for Metro PCS, Virgin Mobile and all the other companies. I think they would do good in the market. Of course like many of you said, they would have to remove some of the features to make the bigger version exclusive. JMO

Nope. Smaller iPhone would further fragment the already confusing app store. Every developer would have to create new apps with different proportions.

You have the HD, lite, free, SD. And now you want to further confuse things by adding another screen size? Angry Birds Mini lite, Angry Birds Lite, Angry birds HD, etc...

Plus, isn't the current iphone in the $200 range already... I don't see how that's any different?
