  • Apple Working on Smaller, Cheaper iPhone to Compete with Android

Apple is said to be working on a new smaller, less expensive version of the iPhone, according to a new report from Bloomberg today. This new model would be in the $200 range and be about a third smaller than the current iPhone 4. With a lower price point, cellular providers could then give customers the choice of either paying for the phone at full price without a contract or give the phone away for free with a two-year contract.

Currently, Apple has 16 percent of the global mobile market share, while rival Googleís market share has more than tripled to 32.9 percent in the fourth quarter. With a new low-cost iPhone, Apple hopes to increase its overall market share worldwide and surpass Google in the process.

Apple is said to be developing an iPhone that can access multiple wireless networks. This dual-mode iPhone would be compatible with both GSM and CDMA wireless standards and be able to work internationally as well.

It is also widely believed that Apple is developing a universal SIM card that would give users the option of choosing cellular networks with an app installed the phone. This technology would allow users to switch networks without having to change SIM cards manually. Itís thought that Apple hopes to cut costs associated with the distribution and management of SIM cards worldwide.

This new mini iPhone is by no means a sure thing, however, as Apple has a history of developing prototype devices then scrapping them along the way. The prototype is also said to be missing the home button according to reports.

CEO Steve Jobs may be on sick leave at the moment, but that hasnít stopped him from making strategic decisions while heís away. Heís said to be working from home, but he has been seen on the Apple campus now and again. Itís a safe bet that heís keeping a close eye on the latest iPad and iPhone versions due later this year. COO Tim Cook has been handling the day-to-day operations while Steve is away. This may actually give Steve more time to oversee the development of the next couple of iOS devices and iron out any wrinkles before they are released. Hopefully, heís getting some rest and not working too hard while heís recuperating though.

Won't happen. 3.5" is already small(that's what she said?). There was the same rumour like 2 years ago. Apple will release only one iPhone a year.

      That's stupid.

For people complaining about a $200 iPhone, I just have to ask one thing. Seriously?! $200 is a reasonable price for a phone that can do as much as an iPhone. People on T-Mobile and carriers were you can't sign a contract for an iPhone pay MORE than that, and have to deal with the BS of unlocking.

The carriers can give iPhones away for free if they want. All business are out to make $$, so don't expect **** for free

Apple would be stupid to release a cheaper iPhone. Why? Because iPhones are selling strong, so they're going to keep the same price until demand falls, or a better phone comes out from one of Apple's competitors. Apple is in business to make $. Selling products cheaper means less $.

Apple is looking to make money. It would be expensive to manufacture 3 products that essentially did the same thing. iPhone for GSM, iPhone for CDMA, and mini iPhone. Remember they would have to program more in the iOS for each variation. Idealistically they will make 1 iPhone. The technology is there in VZW iPhone to operate as a world phone. Considering the LTE network requires a SIM card to use, both VZW and Apple are going to need it.

Unless the cost to manufacture a world iPhone is extremely high, Apple will take the cheapest route to create 1 phone. This is from the business side of the stick. Of course there could be a technological problem preventing us from seeing a world iPhone.

Also last summer I remember reading an article eerily similar to this one, and perhaps modmyi even posted it. Basically saying a smaller iPhone was going to be created for VZW exclusively. Here I thought once the Apple iPhone release the rumor mill would die out.

from reports I'm pretty sure 2/3

      Use your friggin' calculators, people!
Finally a person who has a bit of brains.
If u take an iPad that is a third smaller it's still gonna be bigger than the galaxy tab by a descent margin (8-8.5 inch).

Actually by a smaller iPhone they mean a dumb iPhone. It's gonna be a phone made by apple that probably has music and photos for multimedia and maybe a camera. It won't have the amazing apps that the current i devices have. It's like Mac to iPhone to mini iPhone. Less functionality and by no means a smartphone.

I think the mini iPhone is to compete in the messaging phones category and not the smartphone category of the iPhone and android. Apple just won't be able to make a smartphone for $200

I don't want a smaller iPhone, I want a slightly bigger one! The keys are hard enough to get right with such a small display.

Its Apple's fault no one else to blame, with less control Iphone and IOS would be wider used.
The iPhone is on a lot more than just two U.S carriers and a few in Europe.
It's on 83 carriers in 35 countries in Europe, many countries also sell it factory unlocked so it's also on more carriers than listed. Every network that sells Android in Ireland and U.K also sells iPhone.
Please see Locating iPhone wireless carriers for the entire global list of iPhone carriers, looks to me that iPhone is also sold on pretty much every carrier on the planet, minus a few U.S carriers.

Official not Blackmarket....... If you want to count Black Market then Android market is even bigger........... Jeez the length some IFANS go to to promote the Iphone is amazing! Iphone is not sold by more Carriers then Android! You my friend are wrong.

You know Apple pays for advertising
What are you on about? I never said anything about unofficial carriers or black market.
I simply pointed out your lack of fact when you said the iPhone on only on 2 U.S carriers and a few European carriers. I provided you with a factual list of every iPhone carrier, that proves its on a lot more than you claimed.
I'm not debating that Android is on a lot of carriers too, it is. But iPhone is on just as many.
Show me the list of carriers that Android is on!

If you use Iphone on any carrier then At&t or Verizon it is not official and not sold by the other Carrier in the USA
There is a world outside the United States of America. If you count up the numbers of iPhone carriers and Android carriers GLOBALLY, they are pretty much even. There are carriers that don't have iPhone and there are carriers that don't have Android.

Yes its acting like a Blind fan to Iphone and Apple when you make crazy statements like that.
The Stats speak for themselves, ANdroid is sold more then Iphone over all with as far as who carries it.............
By "Every Carrier on the Planet" thats a list?
No the list was not Factual and was wrong and its embarassing to someone who deals with facts to use such a statement.
You cannot say "T-Mobile" in the US because it can be used, T-Mobile US Does not sell Iphone
We have no idea yet if you can use it on Sprint US,
Cricket US, Virgin US, Boost Mobile US, and a few others.....
Again, I'm not arguing that the total number of Android devices outsells iPhones. My initial argument is with your lack of knowledge on the number of carriers for each platfrom.
The list is factual. It is a list, compiled by Apple, of all carriers that sell their product.
I, or that list, didn't say T-Mobile, Cricket US, Virgin US, Boost Mobile US sell the iPhone.
Again, there is a world outside of the U.S.

I would LOVE an iphone mini. Retina display so resolution could be comparable to the 3G, smaller so it would fit better in my pocket. No contract so I don't have to unlock. I would CERTAINLY get one. Alas, it is unlikely that apple will care and release this beautiful choice.

A mini iPhone is about the worst idea I ever heard. IT WILL NEVER, EVER HAPPEN.

You know, sometimes I feel like u ppl just find some trash to talk about that we already know or isn't true, just so u can churn out 4 articles a day. How about a quality report!", modmyi!
FAIL Did MMI make you read this article? Did they make you comment on it? No...you took the time to do it yourself, so now you know who to blame.

Apple shouldn't do a mini iPhone, they just need to do a good deal with their last generation model. Have the iPhone 3Gs be free with a 2 yr contract and mail in rebate or something like that. You're still getting your product out there but not having to make a different smaller model.
