  • iPhone 3g Unlock Update - Modified Baseband Running
Over the past week the dev team has made some good progress towards 3g unlocking.

The above screenshot and this video are of a 3g iPhone with a modified baseband. The news is that although the baseband fails integrity checks it is still running! So now the dev team can run a modified baseband on the 3g iPhone.

While the dev team still can not estimate how far they are away from a 3g software unlock this is a step in the right direction.

    [via iphone-dev] thanks tony

i know im trying to get it started
i refer to the 2 models as:
      plastic backs *yuch*
      and
      ****METAL BACKS****
thats the only thing thats stopping me from upgrading that plastic:
chips, scratches, breaks, smashes and get set on fire soo easily

Unfortunately I got a plastic, but still hasn't arrived yet.

I'm starting to think that guy on eBay scammed me.

whoa sets on fire lol, now i know that if im lost in the woods i would use my 3G as firewood (then again, if i was lost in the woods with my 3G i would just use google maps, but its also good to know that its flamable so if it dies out....FUEGO!!!)

I reported it to this site because even though the average person doesn't know what this means, the average iPhone user will check this site for news, whereas that same person won't even bother going to the dev teams site. If they go to the dev teams blog they won't make heads or tails of it, but here the bloggers can explain what it means (which I might add they did a great job of doing).

I am an AT&T user with my 3G, but if this succeeds I can get rid of my metal back. I really do not want to got the sim adapter route when I am travelling.

When the unlock occurs you still will have to get the iphone 3g through att or buy abroad won't you. If I am wanting to use with T-mobile and don't want to set up an att account won't I be looking at pretty much the same cost as buying unlocked in say China? What is the least expensive way to get the 3G without setting up an att account?

Until Dev Team release an unlocking software the only way to use your AT&T locked 3G is by using SIM solution. Like mine, it was bought in the US and am using it here in the Philippines with SMART telco.
